Hi, my name is Jillian Peery and I am a beauty product junkie. Oh this love for makeup and hair product goes way back, but I can say with certainty that it reached an all time peak after I graduated with my cosmetology license from Toni & Guy. That’s when it got real crazy! You see, I wanted to learn more! So I took fashion makeup classes and went to as many makeup labs as I could! I was fortunate enough to learn under some great teachers and was able to get my hands on to-die-for mu brands…I was in love. So I took all that knowledge of hair/makeup and started applying it! Again, I was so lucky! I dove head first into doing hair and makeup for fashion shows and photoshoots, weddings and Quinceañeras. I had the privilege of working on the road, in salons, freelance…I’ve been a stylist, color tech, makeup artist, makeup rep, and even an eyebrow specialist–I love it all! Thankfully, my husband is very understanding about my obsession with hair/mu and all the products that go along with it. That’s how you know you’ve got a keeper ladies!

I ran across the picture of the Venezuelan Poodle Moth and instantly thought fairy. Which sparked the question, “Do fairies really exist?”

Let’s first look at the definition:

Fairy (wikipedia)- A fairy is a type of mythical being or legendary creature, a form of spirit, often described as metaphysical, supernatural or preternatural.

Now let’s look at a few clips of what hollywood has imagined them to look like:

First clip is one of my old school favorites, Hook:

Next, a clip from the fabulous Pan’s Labyrinth:

And Lastly, a clip from Snow White and the Huntsman:

I don’t believe that “fairies” are real, but if they were I would imagine them as looking very similar to that of the Venezuelan Poodle Moth. (Featured picture of VPM from collection of photos taken by Dr. Author Anker) So why does my blog heading read: Fairies DO Exist if I don’t really believe in fairies? Well, that brings me to the story of the Cottingley Fairies…

The Cottingley Fairies (as they would later be named) were taken in a series of photos by Elsie Wright and Frances Griffith of Cottingley, England in the early 1900′s. Now, this is an interesting story because these two cousins claimed to have discovered fairies near a brook behind the Wright’s family home. Elsie’s father did not believe the girls, so they decided to take pictures of their little winged friends. These photos would become published, investigated, and gain mixed public reaction for over sixty years.

null

In their later years, Elsie and Frances admitted to faking the first images with the use of paper cutouts, but they still claimed that they really had seen fairies. And even though Frances agreed with Elsie that the first images had been fakes, she maintained that the last image (the image of the fairies in the grass), was indeed genuine.

To this day no one knows who or what story to believe, but quoting the girls, “a rational person doesn’t see fairies”…

That’s how you know you’ve got a keeper ladies! ;) Anyway, the point of me blabbering on about this obsession was to explain my reason for this particular post. While sorting through my email I realized that I had quite a few questions regarding hair/makeup/beauty, most asking about the mu look Clara has at the end of PineLight (the dark, smokey look described as she’s struggling with Victor’s evil grasp). Well, I thought it would be fun to share this look and possibly a few other tips and tricks! So let’s buckle down and get our hands in some makeup!

“As soon as the jewelry was snapped into place, my skin became paler than I had ever seen, my lips turned blood red, and a shadow fell over my eyes…” -PineLight

The best visual of this makeup look would be something similar to the mu on the model below. Keep in mind that this model only reflects the makeup look, she’s much too “much” to look anything like my vision of Clara.

To recreate the smokey smolder look (as I like to call it) follow these steps:

Step One

Prep your eyes!

Before you paint the picture you have to prep the canvas! This is going to keep those eyeshadow pigments in place. Now, if you have oily skin I would recommend primers such as Benefit’s-Stay Don’t Stray, Urban Decay’s-Primer Potion or Two Faced-Shadow Insurance. If you’re skin is normal to dry, you can actually get away with using a nice concealer or your normal foundation, just make sure you put one or the other on your entire lid and underneath your eye.

Step Two

Line your eyes.

Invest in a really good liner that stays on, but will smudge when you want it to…with this look we want it to smudge, then stay there! A few eyeliners I would recommend (prestige brands): Himalaya Herbal Kajal, Urban Decay Zero, Mac Powerpoint Eye Pencil, and Stila Kajal Eyeliner. Since we are looking for a smudged look, you can practically use any drugstore brand of eyeliner, just stay away from the liquid and gel liners (the liquid and gel tend to crack and flake when you try to blend shadow into them). Drugstore eyeliner recommendation: L’oreal Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner.

Tip: If you have large eyes, line from corner to corner (top and bottom lashes). If you have smaller eyes it is best to only line from the middle to the outside (top and bottom lashes). This will prevent the liner from making your eyes appear smaller.

Step Three

Blend liner.

For this look we don’t want to have a harsh line of eyeliner, so after you line, take a nice strong angular brush (eyebrow brush works great…if you don’t have a brow brush use a Q-tip or your finger) and gently stroke your lash line until the liner has a nice soft appearance. Recommended brushes: Mac’s 266 angle brush, Sonia Kashuk Angled Shadow Brush

Step Four

Set Liner.

With your angular brush, apply a dark shadow over the smudged liner. This is the building block for your smokey eye. The shadow will not only ensure that your liner stays in place, but will soften the smudged liner. Recommended shadows: Mac’s Carbon, Sugarpill’s Bulletproof, Urban Decay’s Blackout, Bobbi Brown’s Charcoal

Step Five

Build smoke.

Where there’s smoke there’s fire! And since we want a hot look, we’re going to give a lot of smoke! With a medium sized shadow brush, apply shadow (same shadow as in lash line) slightly above the crease and bring down to form a “C” or half-moon shape around the eye. You will need to build this, so lightly sweep your brush in this half moon shape, until you reach a soft color that graduates outward. (See Figure below) This shape is going to give you a nice sexy contour! Recommended Medium Shadow Brush: Mac’s #239 Shader Brush, Sonia Kashuk’s Small Eye Shadow Brush or if you want to go with a cheap drugstore brand–ELF’s eyeshadow brush

Tip:

If you have trouble blending with your medium shadow brush switch to a brush that has softer fibers. I recommend: Mac’s 224 Tapered Blending Brush, Mac’s 217 Blending Brush, Lancome’s Blending Tip Brush #16 or a good drugstore blending brush like the NYX Shadow brush in large.

Step Six

The Final Blend.

With your blending brush, dust a lighter shadow (for this look we want a deep brown color with a hint of red or mauve) over your entire lid. On this step you can encircle your entire eye, blending into the previous half moon shape. (See Figure below) Recommended shadow: Burberry Midnight Brown #21 (I love, love, love this shadow) Others to recommend: Chanel’s Cinnamon or Mac’s Mulch

Step Seven

Mascara those lashes!

I recommended: Diorshow Mascara, Lancome’s Definicils High Definition Mascara, Maybelline’s Great Lash Big Washable Mascara, Loreal’s Volumous Original Mascara

Optional Step

Just for fun!

For Clara’s look, I saw her shadow as being a bit more glossy. So if you were wanting to recreate her “exact” look, then you could add a bit of vaseline over your lid. Keep in mind this is not a wearable look. The vaseline WILL crease your shadow VERY quickly, but if you were creating this look for fun or for a photo shoot you could add it to make the look even more striking!

Tip: After your eyes are complete, don’t forget to wipe away any shadow that has mistakenly fallen under your eyes or cheeks. And clean up any unwanted smudge by dabbing a thin concealer under your eyes!

Step Eight

Add lipstick!

Clara’s were blood red! Now red lipstick can be a tricky buy, simply because one red may look completely different on two models. This is due to the different pigmentation you have in your skin. Do you pull more cool or warm tones? We want a warm red for this. Here’s a few of my favorite red’s…try Mac’s Ruby Woo, Mac’s Russian Red, Armani’s Hollywood Red, or E.l.f Royal Red to finish off the look!

If you tried this tutorial, let me know how it turned out and post your pictures!

Every time Titanic comes on HBO, my husband and I end up watching it. There’s just something fascinating about the story of the Titanic, making it very difficult to turn the channel when any documentary or movie adaptation is on. Of course, my favorite adaptation being the 1997 hit by James Cameron. That’s what was on last night. And that’s why My Heart Will Go On is stuck in my head today. Thanks Celine Dion, thanks a lot! Anyway, there’s a great site that actually shows real footage of the Titanic wreckage. It has the ship broken down into parts and gives information on each section as the camera passes over and looks into the ship’s wreckage. They also have pictures and videos of artifacts found around the site, as well as stories from the survivors. The unsinkable Molly Brown is a name that might ring a bell. Her true story is listed among the few…she was a remarkable woman in real life. And if you read the article on her, I guarantee you’ll see Kathy Bates in your head. Check out the site and let me know your thoughts…

It seems as though the internet is buzzing about Nasa’s one-ton rover named Curiosity. It’s even been compared to Apollo in the way that it’s bringing back excitement and entertainment to the space program. At least, excitement and entertainment for us, because it’s not like a robot lands on Mars every day. They’ve had several other robots land on Mars, but apparently Curiosity is something new and different. I must confess, it is interesting to know that this machine is going to be exploring Mars for the next 2 years and that it will be sending high resolution images and hd video back for us to watch. BUT if all there really is on Mars is dirt and more dirt, then those images and footage will get VERY boring, VERY quickly. I kind of feel sorry for the person who has to constantly monitor all of that stuff…well, unless they discover some weird creatures out there…or kryptonite. That would definitely make watching endless hours of footage worth while.

And I will admit, I’m intrigued to see what information this $2.5 billion dollar machine can give us. Let’s see what Curiosity can do…

Anyway, Congrats to Natalie and Culum for being last weeks Giveaway winners! Last week I decided to add a second winner, just because you guys were so awesome about spreading the word. So keep the buzz up guys and don’t forget to enter the new Giveaway! Good luck!

**GIVEAWAY ENTRY AT BOTTOM OF BLOG**

So I have yet to blog the most important and exciting thing that has ever happened to me in my entire life. It’s not really “hot off the press” news since it all began 7 months ago, but it’s news to those who have never met me. And it’s very very very exciting! Okay. That was my lead up to what I’m about to share with you. Well…guys…my husband and I are going to be…parents! Yep. That’s right! I’m totally preggo and due to pop October 29th. Oh and we are having a boy! His name will be Boston Chase Peery. :)

Anyway, my pregnancy has kind of been a major part of my web absence. PLUS my husband had surgery on his back in June so I’ve been doing a lot of hanging out with him while he’s been off work. Now that he’s feeling better and my belly’s getting rounder, I figured I should jump back into things full blast! That’s why I started the blog giveaways!

With all these new changes happening to my body, I can’t help but think of all the other changes that will occur in our lives once our little boy arrives. I like to focus on all the fun things…like…dressing him up for Halloween, his first Christmas and Easter. And I keep finding myself wondering if he’s going to like the same things as I did when I was younger. Will he enjoying reading Narnia or Lord of the Rings? Will he watch the original Batman over and over again or will Superman be his hero? Maybe he’ll find Edward Scissorhands fascinating or get lost in the Labyrinth. Will he quote Ghostbusters or will he want to quote Back to the Future? There’s so many things to wonder! And I know I’m skipping way ahead. I realize that he won’t be reading Narnia for awhile, if he ever chooses to read it, but it’s so fun to think about. Everything about pregnancy and becoming a mother has made me reflect on how it was to be a child. How everything contained so much wonder. Life still contains that element of wonder, but it’s harder to see when you’re older…it’s not quite as obvious as it was back then. That’s probably why I enjoy books and movies so much. A good book or movie can capture all those magical elements…a few great examples:

Hook:

Batman:

Edward Scissorhands:

Labyrinth:

NeverEnding Story:

Those movies take me back! And I can only imagine the creative minds of those who took part in making them! It’s going to be a fun day when our baby is old enough to enjoy them. :)

You guys don’t forget to enter this weeks giveaway! Thanks to all those who entered last week. The more who enter, the more stuff I’m going to start giving away!

July 26, 2012

What inspires a good blog post? I keep finding myself coming back to this question. It seems I have a hard time coming up with one “good” topic I would like to jot down. Therefore, I end up procrastinating a great deal on actually posting. Now that everything is happening with the release of my second book, I’ve got to get to the bottom of this…I have to sit down and type up thoughts, happenings, questions, or whatever might be going through my head at the moment. Because I like to write down things and because it gets me in the mood for storytelling. It’s the whole sharing my thoughts with the world that bothers me sometimes. But here I go anyway…

In my previous post I let everyone know that I will be gifting ebooks on a weekly basis. This is something I am very excited about doing because I want to give back to those who have been keeping up with me. So make sure to keep checking my website weekly to see what books I’ll be giving away. If you are a Goodreads member mark PineLight and TigerLily TBR and you’ll be able to keep up with even more giveaways! Those giveaways generally run each month for paperback editions. Anyway, if you are subscribed to my blog you will notice that each week I will include the link to these giveaways at the end of my Monday blog postings. Easy-peasy to enter. :)

Just incase you missed reading my last post, here are the current Giveaways:

On to other things…

The Book Trailer Productions is finally up and running! I have received countless emails regarding both my PineLight and TigerLily book trailers, all asking where I had them made. Well, now you can get the same quality trailer and at a great price nonetheless! Book trailer’s are one of the newest ways to advertise your work…and one of the most effective ways! A gallery/portfolio of book trailers will be added to the page at some point, but seeing how my website is still under construction, it might be a little while longer before all of those are up for viewing. There will be samples of each trailer package added soon though. And you can always request more information or samples through the email forum. Let me know what you guys think! Here’s a direct link: Book Trailer Productions

And completely veering away from that…

I finally joined Pinterest. Everyone kept talking so much about it and asking why I hadn’t joined yet. Honestly, I was trying to stay away from opening up another cyber account because I already feel connected and available online too much as it is…didn’t want to commit to another account. BUT I thought I would join just so that I could see what all the fuss was about. And…well…Now I’m addicted. I spent 4 hours the first time I logged on. I was literally plugged into the site…scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. Pinning and pinning and pinning. Immediately after I was ready to take on a craft and wanted to bake something. It was like riding a creativity high. What I’m trying to say is, ” I get it now.” If you haven’t joined, here are a few examples of things you are missing:
