About this author

I'm the author of a novel, "From the Memoirs of a Non-Enemy Combatant," which has been selected for the Indiebound Next List and the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Program. I'm also the editor of a book review website: Tottenville Review.

The humor in this first novel is nothing to laugh at. Though you’re not really supposed to get that until you’re nearly done.

That’s because in the meantime you’ll be too busy snickering.(Read the review) read more »

The greatest fiction makes you believe you've been somewhere, and that you understand something that was once a mystery. Adam Johnson's novel does both. Bravo. I'd give it the National Book Award right now.

Paper Conspiracies is a bold leap of the imagination, and testament to what one can come up with while plumbing the depths of forgotten histories. And even so, Daitch goes six feet deeper. This is much more than a "historical novel," though there's p...more

Leche by R. Zamora Linmark
" There’s no reason why R. Zamora Linmark shouldn’t shoot for the Great Philippine Novel in his ambitious and wide-ranging new book, Leche, even if it’s told from the perspective of a balikbayan, returning to the Philippines after 13 years. The fact... "

“In this funny debut, flashy Filipino fashion designer Boy Hernandez sees his American dream become a nightmare when he’s ensnared in a terrorist plot and shipped to Guantanamo. Gilvarry nails the couture scene, but Boy’s rough journey from Manolo to Gitmo is no joke.”
Andrew Abrahams

“From the Memoirs of a Non-enemy Combatant is sharply written and wryly witty, touching on the sensitivities and paranoia of post-9/11 America... Combining a Kafkaesque hero with a captivating “coming to New York” story, Gilvarry’s debut is a timely and touching triumph.”
Stephanie Turza, Booklist

Alex Gilvarry Woah woah woah! Thank you so much, Christina. I'd like to write a Swedish thriller next, I could be good at that. Plus I've never read one. But it'll probably just be about me again.

Christina (A Reader of Fictions) I thought you might like to know that I selected From the Memoirs of a Non-Enemy Combatant as one of my favorite reads of 2011: http://readeroffictions.blogspot.com/

Can't wait to see what you do next!
