The first is to deliver improved protection for marine turtles in partnership with the Local Ocean Trust in Watamu.  The second is to support Born Free’s Pride of Kenya initiative and, in particular, the building of lion-proof bomas in rural communities.  And, the third is to support the Mwalunganje Elephant Sanctuary, a community project not far from the coast http://www.medinapalms.com/ Poaching is now highly organised and carried out on such a scale as never seen before. Militia armed with state of the art weaponry have become the new poachers, the new scourge sweeping Africa. Do you want to help us?

“It is a great honour for Born Free to have been selected by the World Travel Market as one of the three winners of the 2013 award.

We have always believed that, far and wide, the needs and problems facing people and wildlife are interlinked. As human populations increase so do the pressures we impose on natural resources, wild environments and wild species. At this critical time, our work has become even more necessary.

This award has given us all enormous encouragement and, on behalf of everyone at Born Free, I would like to express my gratitude.”
Born Free has a portfolio of over 100 conservation and wild animal welfare projects worldwide.

Will Travers OBE, co-founder and CEO of the charity, praised the dedication and commitment of the many men and women involved in Born Free’s projects overseas, and called for increased commitment by all stakeholders to support the humane conservation of wildlife.

“Responsible tourism can have a lasting and positive impact on the survival of species, the conservation of environments and the long-term prospects of some of the world's most fragile communities. I hope that Born Free's achievement in winning this World Tourism Award will inspire others to do what they can to make our world a better place for all."

I do so admire those who have the courage to follow their hearts. The Adamson’s did just that. Joy too is a woman after my own heart.. there’s no temple more magnificent than the wilds, no miracle more breathtaking than an African sunset and no sermon more moving than the roar of a lion.. that is freedom." “It is a great honour for Born Free to have been selected by the World Travel Market as one of the three winners of the 2013 award.

Living in paradise has its downside but one of the more blissful aspects of living in the Seychelles archipelago is upon waking.

Drawn to the balcony I open the double doors, breaking the seal of the welcome coolness of my mosquito-free, air-conditioned bedroom.  The contrast is tangible as I’m immediately enveloped by the warm blanket of the tropics. The quietness, intermittently broken by the sweet tune of birds, the first hint of light filtering through the haze of dawn.

My eyes drink in the splendour before me, the mystery of the mist shrouded Silhouette island in the distance surreal, the expansive sea, calm and silky as a rippling Sari, exquisite colours, shimmering silver and gold.

Elevated in the mountains, the warm sea below beckons, as it caresses the fine, white powdery beach. Palm fronds as still and calm as the ocean itself, sparkling in the early sunlight. How very blessed I was to live in this little paradise.

After a particularly revelrous night and the dead sleep that follows, I had overslept and would have to forgo my glorious morning dip and rush down to Port Victoria instead, to give instruction to the booking office at the Pirate Alms Hotel. Our new arrivals, a deep sea fishing party, had chartered Mako, a particularly handsome motor yacht complete with marlin out-riggers and harpoon deck. The crew had to be summoned, the rods, reels and fishing equipment sorted as well as provisions for the next few days, purchased.  Time was of the essence so I hopped into the bathroom and that’s when horror struck.. read the rest in My Funny Africa.

Due to the very late start to the rainy season and the lack of browse and graze in the National Park and the bush surrounding Livingstone, the town itself was invaded most nights by herds of Elephant searching for food. They walked right up the main road through the town and then fanned out into the residential suburbs looking for such delicacies as paw-paws, mangoes, bananas and pumkins. Before the sun rose.. read the rest in My Funny Africa.

Wild Harley Alberto Rodrigues, or Al as his friends called him, was proud of his new acquisition. It had cost him a year’s salary even though the Harley was second hand.  He’d taken delivery in Beira and was on his way to Vilanculos to meet up with some friends.  Having grown up in Africa he was used to dodging elephant, buffalo, snakes, the odd buck and even lion on occasion, crossing the road, but never an old wild woman in blue pyjamas. No way would his friends believe this! (Read the rest of this story in 'My Funny Africa)
