Unorthodox by Deborah Feldman
"Five stars because the end of this book when Ms. Feldman said that her divorce was final on Passover and the significance of that gave me a little chill. And I say that as a non-religious person. The first part of the book was interesting in a WTF..." Read more of this review »

“The purpose of poetry is to remind us
how difficult it is to remain just one person,
for our house is open, there are no keys in the doors,

To believe you are magnificent. And gradually to discover that you are not magnificent. Enough labor for one human life.”

“I am hungry for power, but not to lord over others; only to own myself.”

“I'd rather believe in reincarnation than hell. The idea of an afterlife is much so more tolerable when returning is an option.”
Deborah Feldman, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots

“If my mind cannot be tied down, if my dreams cannot be diminished, then no amount of restraints can really guarantee my quiet submission.”
Deborah Feldman, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots

“Not that I want to be a god or a hero. Just to change into a tree, grow for ages, not hurt anyone.”
Czesław Miłosz

“In a room where
people unanimously maintain
a conspiracy of silence,
one word of truth
sounds like a pistol shot.”
