Hello, brujxs and witches of the world!

I’ve been celebrating the launch of my latest book, LABYRINTH LOST all week. Thank you for all your tweets, posts, and happy book birthday wishes. It means the world to me. So, I’ve decided to have a special giveaway! I painted this skull for my street team. I happen to have more skulls waiting to be painted, and one lucky winner will receive it. It won’t be the same as the one pictured below. It will be 100% unique and just as witchy.

screen-shot-2016-09-01-at-9-46-42-pm

How do you win? That’s easy. All you have to do is SHOW ME YOUR #RESTINGWITCHFACE.

What does a resting witch face look like? I mean, we come in all shapes and sizes. Dark, light, and all the shades in between. To be a bruja, brujo, or brujx in Labyrinth Lost means to have power. Be proud of it. That being said the interpretation is open for all. For example, my #RestingWitchFace looks like this:

rwf-z

Yours could look totally different! Get creative! (I do ask that you double think before you paint your face with traditional sugar skull makeup if it is not your holiday to celebrate.) There are so many options you can do! Witchy makeup, fearlessly fly no makeup, smize circles around Tara Banks, etc. Go out there and do your thing!

CONTEST RULES

Take your picture and post it! You can post it online! Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram! Facebook is fine, but if the post is private, I won’t be able to see it!
The post or picture MUST include the #RestingWitchFace tag. Example: Showing my #RestingWitchFace to celebrate #LabyrinthLost!
Log your entry in the Rafflecopter form below. This will help me verify entries. Yes, all entries will be verified!
More than one entry is allowed, as long as it is not the SAME photo.
Contest starts today and ends on 9/17/16
US & Canada only. Sorry!

Or, Confessions of an Author Four Years After Best Day Ever

380240_401229216576164_1066264456_nFour years ago on this day, The Vicious Deep was published. It was my debut novel. I was 24 and had accomplished the dream of publishing before I was 25. I don’t know why that’s a dream, but when you’re young and there’s one thing you’ve wanted to do your whole life, it needs to happen ASAP.

The Vicious Deep is still the book of my heart. It’s a book I wanted to write because it was the book that I wanted to read. A friend and I were browsing through a bookstore, and I said, “I wanted to read a different kind of mermaid fantasy.” And he said, “So write it.” Like, duh.

That’s it. That’s all it took.

I’d written two novels before this. One when I was 17 and got rejected because what did I know about life in general? At 28 going on 29 I still feel like I know nothing, but that’s another blog post. Back then, my query letter was better than my actual novel. If Yoda had been my mentor, I would’ve left him like Luke did even though maybe I wasn’t ready even though I felt like I was. Then at 19, I wrote another novel. This one faced the “we already have a book about a Latina coming of age.” That was my first brutal awakening when it came to publishing politics. The good thing is that, even if they weren’t publishing my Latina coming of age, they were at least publishing someone’s Latina coming of age. Even if, like the Highlander, there can only be one of us at a time.

I didn’t write for a solid year after that.

I know. Sadness. “Don’t let The Man keep you down” and all that. I felt like I had stories inside of me. Even now, with 7 traditionally published books under my belt, I still have this paralyzing fear that my stories don’t belong because don’t belong.

Spoiler alert: I wrote again eventually.

I wrote the book that had been waiting for me my whole life (20 years at the time). Tristan Hart isn’t perfect, but he’s mine. In a totally non-creepy way, of course. There’s a lot more to be said about my publishing journey. Sometimes it feels like the days and years blend together. Sometimes I can’t remember if an event was last summer or three summers ago. Maybe I should cut back on the wine. Maybe everything happens in the exact way it’s supposed to. Maybe I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. If you’re ever feeling like you’re lost in the Galaxy of Publishing, I want you to remember that you are not alone. That’s what’s helped me a whole bunch. In the past four years, I’ve made lasting friendships, met incredible readers, learned from brilliant editors, and wrote HALF A MILLION WORDS. Half a million words = seven brain babies.

If you can’t appreciate that when you hold a novel you hold the carefully sculpted creation that was born out of someone’s squishy brain, then I don’t know if I can help you.

But anyway.

Back to books and writing and anniversaries.

Books have their own journeys. I thought it’d be cool to show you guys some of the older cover comps for The Vicious Deep.

WE HAVE ARRIVED!

1459814_694614657237617_839453627_nNow we’re here!

There are some things that never change after your first book. I’ve had these feeling with each one:

You’re always nervous during a book launch. Always. Maybe that feeling changes when you’re Stephen King. I’ll have to ask him.
You always feel insecure when you’re drafting. I’m not the kind of author who feels 100% sure of their first drafts. I bask in self-loathing until I edit for the diamond in the rough.
You’re going to make mistakes. Take this as you will.
You alternate between thinking you’re genius and shit at the same time.

Going forward I want to try some new things like:

Write more. Write freely. Write something just for you. I’ve been writing a lot. I haven’t finished a novel a month yet, but I’ve started different ones. They each bring me a different kind of happiness.
Don’t compete against others. Our writing journeys are totally unique. Compete against yourself if you must, but envy will get you nowhere.
Tweet and Facebook less. The time you spend on social media can be spent writing. I know it’s hard.
Be gracious. Publishing is a rollercoaster. Sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down, and sometimes both of those things happen in the same day.
Julie Murphy wrote a great Facebook about this. “Always say thank you.”
Be good to your readers.

Speaking of readers!

LET THE HUNT BEGIN!
***** Meet Sophie Lira! Author of SAFE WITH YOU *****

Sophie Lira grew up smack dab in the middle of New Jersey. As a self-proclaimed sports junkie she can usually be found rooting for the New York Yankees, Baltimore Ravens, and especially her Alma Mater, Rutgers University. She’s also a proud beer snob with a preference for crisp pilsners, pumpkin anything, and chocolatey stouts. Her number one passion outside of writing is her never-ending wanderlust. She still resides in Central New Jersey and spends her days writing and pouring pints at a local brewery. Favorite things include: Dunkin’ Donuts coconut iced coffee, the Olympics, all-you-can-eat sushi, and Siberian Huskies.

***** SAFE WITH YOU *****

Olivia Simon is starting over in the Big Easy. Her new job as a yoga instructor means she gets to pursue her passion while giving her the motivation she needs to get back on track. But she’s scared. Really scared. Scared her abusive ex-boyfriend will find her. Scared of all things that go bump in the night… and day. She knows her ex will have a claim on her future happiness unless she can find her own peace. Which starts with Kyle.

Kyle Avery, a former college baseball player on the brink of going pro, is also starting over. His dream since Little League was shattered when a jealous rival went too far in a pre-season game. After a few surgeries, all Kyle is left with are a few rods in his leg, a rebuilt knee, and no idea who he is without baseball. But when he trades center field for a yoga mat, he finds solace in a way he never imagined. Kyle knows there’s something about Olivia. Something he needs to move forward.

But Olivia loves to run and it’s too soon for her to be playing house. Olivia and Kyle want to invest in each other, but the secrets they’ve kept take a dangerous turn when Olivia’s past returns with a vengeance. Devastated and helpless, Olivia wonders who she can really trust, and Kyle questions if he ever will be able to keep her safe.

***** Exclusive Content *****
Bonus scene from chapter 7

My phone vibrates in my pocket and my eyes go wide when Tyler’s name pops up on the screen. I press my fingertip to my ear as static comes through the speaker. “Ty? Hold on a sec, I have crappy service.” I cover my palm over the edge of the phone. “Hey, I’ll be back out in a minute. It’s my brother.”

“Ollie?” Tyler says, louder. “Can you hear me?”

“Hey, Ty. How’s school?” I smile that he actually took the time to call me back. We have a seriously fucked up relationship. Ever since he left for Los Angeles, I feel like he wants nothing to do with me. Even when I called him hysterical about me and Braden, he brushed it off and practically hung up on me. He knew what Braden was doing and how he was treating me, but seemingly didn’t care.

“It’s good.” His voice muffles and drops out as he talks to someone. “Listen, I have bad news about your—”

“No, you promised me!” My voice rises in anger and I stalk out to the parking lot. “I haven’t seen you in over a year. I miss you so much.”

“I know, I miss you, too. But, my girlfriend wants me to meet her parents in San Francisco. They’re paying. I really like her, Ollie.”

And I’m your sister, asshole.

“It’s my…” I haven’t had a good birthday, ever. “Please, don’t you care about me?”

“Of course I do, and I’m sorry. I promise I’ll make it up to you.” He doesn’t even sound sincere, only a robotic response I’ve grown accustomed to throughout the years. “I’m late for work. I need to go. Love you.”

The line goes out and I nearly smash my phone into the gravel. Black dots from my mascara speckle my wrist as I wipe away the tears. I give up holding the pressure building in my chest as I lean against Kyle’s car and let the tears fly.

“Liv?” Kyle jogs over and wraps me in a hug. “Hey, stop. What’s wrong?”

I don’t care how sweaty and grimy he is from the field. The comfort I’ve been looking for my whole life explodes with his touch. I bury my face into his damp shirt and let out the emotion that’s been bottled up for weeks. I’m so sick of Tyler pushing me away and acting like I’m some random friend from high school. Everyone except Natasha bails on me and I don’t know how much more I can handle.

****

That was pretty rad! Don’t forget to add it to your TBR or go ahead and buy a copy! Make sure you

Make sure you enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of signed books by me, Stacey Kade, Amanda Heger, and more!

February 23, 2016

Today is the day, people!

LLOTLevel_coverife on the Level is live wherever books are sold! It’s the third book in the On the Verge series.

River Thomas was born a wild card. Her mother left before River hit puberty, and her alcoholic father raised her to have the best poker face in the city, but when he dies unexpectedly, River’s already dangerous lifestyle spirals out of control. Six months sober, she relapses, and the resulting bender ends with her on the run from a guy looking to settle a score.

She wants to be better–needs to be better–before she ends up like her dad. The road leads her to Sun Valley, Montana, where she checks herself into a rehab center. But before her first night, she decides to go for a last hurrah, and the beautiful stranger at the bar is just what the doctor ordered.

She leaves before sunrise, and starts her ninety-day program, still thinking of his face. But her last hurrah with the guy of her dreams is also a counselor and extremely off-limits.

Their attraction is too strong to ignore, and soon she finds herself gambling with the one thing she never thought she would—her heart.

Here are some TRU FACTS about what it took to write this baby.

I learned how to play poker to write some of these scenes. My best friend, Paul, showed me some key games for a scene in The Savage Blue. After that, I had a basic tutorial during a retreat with some amazing authors in France.
Montana is my favorite state. I lived there for a period of time and I keep finding excuses to go back.
Hutch is my favorite of the three heroes of On the Verge.
I wrote the first 10k of this book in a month. The remaining 80k(ish) I wrote in a week.
River has been the hardest character journeys to write because I knew I’d have to put her through some stuff. I constantly want to save her, but at the same time, I know that she needs to save herself. Her journey is hers alone.
I called a couple of rehab centers and was promptly hung up on. Thanks to some key friends, I was able to find some resources.

There’s a giveaway happening until March 4th. If you leave a comment here or the original post, you’ll be entered to win 1 of 8 charms!

Meet Sky Lopez!

9781626816657_FC“The first time I’ll wear white to a wedding, I won’t be the bride.

I turn in the full-length mirror, admiring the way the soft white satin hugs my Hamptons-summer-kissed skin. When I tried the dress on back in April, it was snug on my hips. Then, I was in Boston working night shifts at the hospital that included a steady supply of pastries, cold pizza, and coffee. When I wasn’t working the graveyard shift, I was clinging to the arm of my perfect boyfriend with one hand and downing cocktails with the other. I’ll say one thing about this break-up—it’s the only one that’s ever caused me to lose weight instead of pile it on.

That and wedding planning.

Wedding planning is a stressful business, especially when the groom is your uncle, and your entire family gets to see your life plans spectacularly come apart at the seams.”

“The universal rule of servers is: the bigger the order, the bigger the prick.

It was true during my year of “soul searching” after high school graduation, bartending at El Gallo on Espanola Way, when sunburnt moms sent back LITs for being too strong.

It was true the year after that at the Old Post in Missoula, Montana when diet-obsessed sorority girls asked for the Country House Special Sauce Deluxe burger, but, you know, without the onions and tomatoes and, oh, no special sauce.

And it was true, when I made health shakes at Super Green Joe’s in Brooklyn the year after that. If I hear “is that protein gluten-soy-dairy-free and fair trade?” one more time…

Now at The Red Cup, Mr. Tall Vanilla Latte No Whip, No Foam, Extra shot, Half Skim, Half Whole, Pump of Hazelnut is a pretty big prick.”

Also, Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Today is the launch of LOVE ON THE LEDGE, book 2 in the On The Verge series.

9781626816657_FC

I’m going to tell you about it (briefly) in photos. The novel is about Sky Lopez.

Sky! (Naya Rivera)

She’s in an inbetween time in her life. So she turns to planning her favorite uncle’s wedding. As one does.

She’s accompanied by her cousin Leti, and BFF River.

Leti

River

She isn’t looking for love, but enter Hayden Robertson, a roofer with a heart of gold. Lets have a big shout out for #TeamNiceGuy

Hayden (Matt Barr)

They’re all in the Hamptons. While Sky is trying to plan the wedding, it is a whole lot of Murphy’s Law. But there’s the beach, and Hayden, and kissing.

BUT Hayden and Sky have problems! They both have baggage and in comes their issues. Not to mention Sky’s family is a little bit intrusive. Also, there’s this guy named Xandro who really thinks he and Sky belong together. He has a big ego.

Xandro (Justin Baldoni)

Oh, yeah, Sky and her family are Ecuadorian-American (It’s a real thing I promise)

But back to Sky and Hayden. Did I mention Hayden?

Moar Hayden

That’s a super brief not-actual-summary of LOVE ON THE LEDGE. I loved writing this book. Thank you all for your support.

From Chapter 10 – Testing the Waters

…“Hey, hey there, Lyla.” Liam tried to be consoling. “We all agree with you, don’t we guys?” The two youngest nodded their heads in silent agreement. “See? We’re all with you on this. This was just a first step. A semi-test. We just needed to stretch it out and see what it could do, what e could do with what we’ve got. We, none of us except for Tillie here, have really had a chance to see what we’re capable of in this department. This was just to see it in action. What is the trouble with that? Are you okay, Lyla? Lyla?” Liam grabbed her arm as she rose.

Lyla levitated. She suddenly straightened into a standing position and brought  Liam up with her. She felt very powerful. Liam felt a surge of energy from her arm. He released her like he’d been shocked. Suddenly, the wind picked up coming off the ocean. The waves crashed into the shore and their blankets got soaked. The tide came in fast. Faster than they had ever seen it. Tillie scrambled around and tried to gather their things while she kept a worried eye on Lyla.

“Lyles! Lyla! What’s wrong? What did we do? Stop it, please!” Tillie shouted as she and Adrian picked up the bag and blankets. She looked as though she was about to cry. Adrian put his arm around her and they took a step back from Lyla and Liam.

The tide rushed in around their feet. It was fast and strong. In and out and

every time it came in, there was a bit more water. Tillie wanted to run. She was scared. Adrian sensed her fear and held her fast.

“It’s going to be okay!” He had to shout over the wind.

The rest of the people on the beach cleared out fast. Fires were put out by the

rushing tide and people scattered upward toward the town. The four of them were alone now on the beach. Liam stood in front of Lyla, between her and the ocean. “Lyla! Stop this! It’s okay! It’s going to be alright!” He shouted at the top of his lungs, but it was as if no one was even in front of her at all. She threw her arms up and looked possessed. Tillie buried her head into Adrian’s shoulder and wept. Adrian dragged her a few more steps back, away from shore.

Liam remembered just then what Lyla had said about Mom touching her arm and ‘bringing her back to earth’. He grabbed both her arms in the air. There was a strike of lightning across the water and a loud crack of thunder just as Liam flew back and landed in the next incoming wave. Lyla also flew back and landed softly in the surf. She was sitting upright and her eyes grew big. Her arms fell by her side and she fell back into the water, unconscious.

Liam was the first to her side and picked her head up out of the water. Tillie

screamed as Adrian ran over to help Liam. The surf calmed down and Liam picked Lyla up out of it and carried her away from the water.

As they walked away from the ocean, it receded to its normal level. The wind

turned steadier and died down. Lyla hung in Liam’s arms like a wet rag doll. Tillie had tears streaming down her face. Her hands over her mouth, she followed silently behind them.

As they reached dry sand, all they could hear was the soft surf and Tillie

muttering, “Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God,” over and over. Liam placed Lyla down in the sand as gently as he could. Adrian stood just behind him, to Liam’s right.

“Is she alright? Is she conscious yet? Tillie, will you please stop?” Adrian turned around and grabbed Tillie’s shoulders. He grabbed so hard she jumped, then was silent. He eased up on his grip looking at her apologetically.

“Oh, God! Oh, God! What happened? What did we do? Did we do this, Ade? Oh, God!” Tillie was properly hysterical now. She went back to her mumbling.

Or, we reveal the covers for LOVE ON THE LEDGE and LIFE ON THE LEVEL at the same time.

About the series: On the Verge is my New Adult series published by Diversion Books. They can be read as standalones.

On 11/11/11 we released book 1: LUCK ON THE LINE.
On 05/05/15 we're releasing book 2: LOVE ON THE LEDGE!

LOOK AT THE PRETTY! Part 1...

Something you might not know: My uncles are the inspiration for Pepe and Tony, the happy grooms. I also fell for a roofer.

imageSynopsis:

Sky Lopez thought she had it all—the perfect job, the perfect relationship, the perfect life…until she discovers her not-so-perfect boyfriend has been cheating on her. So when her uncle asks her to help plan his Hamptons wedding, Sky jumps at the chance, leaving all of her “perfect” future plans in the rearview mirror.

The wedding doesn’t prove as good a distraction as she’d hoped, because when her relatives and friends find out she’s single, they put Sky in their match-making sights. Never mind that she’s only twenty four. Never mind that she doesn’t want to settle for anyone other than Mr. Right. Seemingly everyone in Sky’s life wants her to get married and have babies. Like, yesterday.
So when Hayden—a sweet, sexy roofer—plummets through the ceiling and practically falls into her lap, she can’t help but think that maybe nice guys do just fall from the sky.
Soon Sky finds herself juggling crumbling wedding plans, the cheating ex who's trying to win her back, the cute plastic surgeon her family thinks is perfect for her, and the hot roofer she can't seem to get off her mind.
As the wedding date draws closer, Sky will need to choose one—or none—to keep herself from falling off the ledge, and maybe into love.

Something you might not know: Life on the Level takes place in my favorite state, Montana.

Synopsis:

Never gamble more than you can afford to lose.
River Thomas was born a wild card. Her father took one look at her and decided that his daughter would have the best poker face in the city.
But when he dies unexpectedly, River's already dangerous life is spiraling out of control. After six months without gambling—staying away from the tables where she makes and loses her fortune—she relapses, and soon must go on the run from a guy looking to settle a score.
She wants to be better, needs to be better, before she ends up like her dad. The road leads her to rehab in Sun Valley, Montana. But first, one last hurrah, and the beautiful stranger at the bar is just what the doctor ordered. She leaves before sunrise still thinking of his face. But her last hurrah with the guy of her dreams is also her counselor for the next ninety days...
Attraction, however, is too strong a lure to ignore, and soon River finds herself gambling with the one thing she never thought she would—her heart.
