In a word - REVIEWS. Whether they're good or bad, they lend you credibility and you can't have too many of them.

When I finish a book I usually spend a week or two querying every book blog I can find that reviews in my genre. I may only hear back from one out of twenty, but rejection is simply part of the experience of being a SPA :) .

I do my best to be polite and persistent, and I read their review policies before contacting them. I offer to do e-book giveaways and I've also made some book-themed jewelery as prizes.

There are many groups here on Goodreads that do read-4-reviews, and I've had some good luck there. I've bought one of those sidebar ads here as well, and have free books available for download.

Unfortunately, with all of the author shenanigans going on it's getting more and more difficult to find bloggers willing to take a chance on an unrepresented writer. The only thing I can control is my own behavior and reputation, and hope that the stories will speak for themselves.

And then it's back to building the elusive better mousetrap ;)

Ashley the Hufflepuff Kitten hi there Derrolyn! I see your updates all the time via friends, so I thought we ought to just make it GR official ;)

Tamera YES! I'm trying so hard to pretend that I'm not okay with John Barrowman in Uggs. 'Cause I might be.

message 54: by Tamera

Tamera Because we can, Derrolyn.... because we can.

Nemo (the Moonlight Library) You wrote your first book at age 49? I swear to god Derrolyn you look about 30 in your profile pic (more like late 20s). What the hell is your secret to eternal youth? Do you sacrifice virgins? I seriously thought you were about in your mid-30s or something (only because I know you have teen kids). Seriously, are you some kind of immortal?

Krystal Thanks for accepting my friend request.

Oh that sounds really cool. They must be quite happy in their home if they are thriving like that. A twenty inch fish is a seriously big fish. lol

You have some beautiful paintings. :D

Derrolyn Anderson Willow wrote: "I love the exquisite fish painting in your profile. Were you inspired by Three Worlds? I used to have a poster of that in my bedroom."

Just saw your comment! I'm not getting notifications for some reason :(

No, I had to look that up to see it was an Escher - I was actually inspired by the four monster koi that are rapidly outgrowing my patio pond. We're going to add a connected horse trough with some water lilies as a bio-filter ASAP, because they eat all the plants we put in there! (They're seriously huge, and have grown from 2" to about 20", and share the pond with a ton of former carnival goldfish, LOL).

Willow I love the exquisite fish painting in your profile. Were you inspired by Three Worlds? I used to have a poster of that in my bedroom.

Navessa Aw, thank you!

Loki (of Smartassgard) Took a pic to show you. Please ignore the shoddy quality, it is late and my cell phone has no flash. :)

Loki (of Smartassgard) I just got a full screen ad from Amazon about The Mackenzie Legacy and had to smile. Yay, Derrolyn!!! :)

message 45: by Navessa

Navessa Ach! I couldn't agree more. I'm having a photographer friend of mine take it. I'll be masked, as I'll be publishing under the pen name, but I don't want it to be silly, so I'm hitting her up for some professional help.

Jennifer Hey! It's been forever but I just wanted to see how you've been! Really excited to hear more about your 80's themed novel :D Have you been watching John Hughes on repeat?

Willow I just had to tell you, you're paintings are lovely, Derrolyn. You give your still-life’s so much vibrancy, color and movement. It reminds me a little bit of Janet Fish, although your style is all your own. :D
