Dr. Norman LaFave has spent
the last thirty years as a
scientist, engineer, educator,
and author working for the U.S.
Navy, U.S. Air Force, NASA, the
FAA, and the Lockheed Martin
Corporation. He holds a B.S. in
physics and mathematics from
Carnegie-Mellon University and
a Ph.D. in physics from the
University of Texas at Austin. He
has been awarded an Air Force
Weapons Laboratory Fellowship,
a National Research Council
Associateship, and the NASA
Award for Engineering Excellence.
Awarded a 2010 Texas Exes
Award for Outstanding Teachers,
Dr. LaFave currently teaches
physics in Houston, Texas, where
he lives with his wife, Shannon,
and two children, Jillian and
Brock. He has a keen interest in
the arts, literature, and public
policy.

I am sitting here watching my eleventh-grade physics students do an active reading assignment and I am astounded by the trouble they are having doing it; their complete inability to stay focused and on task. They seem to find extracting information from the chapter I assigned nearly impossible.
