About this author

Hal is a scientist and a science fiction author with published stories in the Okal Rel Universe.

After growing up in Prince George, he graduated from the University of Northern British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science with a joint major in Chemistry and Physics. He is now pursuing his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Alberta, where he studies plasmas and photonics for inertial confinement fusion. Strange activities like labwork, playing underwater hockey and doing yoga manifest in his weekly life.

Currently he's working on a hard science fiction novel dealing with signal...more

The one I got was a Free Spirit 302001, about 7-8 years old. Free Spirit is a good company for value treadmills without a lot of frills, and some other ones to keep in mind are True, Life Fitness, Pace Master, and Lifespan. Pushing Ice
by Alastair Reynolds
read in June, 2013
A sci-fi epic that stretches across massive spans of time and space, "Pushing Ice" is at the same time a very human and accessible story about survival, anger and forgiveness. The level of detail is up to Reynolds's usual standards, and you can get l...more

Thrice Upon a Time
by James P. Hogan

James P. Hogan has some really great ideas that he explores quite thoroughly in this book. Having spent a great deal of time thinking about communication through time in my own work, it was refreshing to read a story where someone had gone into as mu...more

More of Hal's books…
Douglas Adams
“The Guide says there is an art to flying", said Ford, "or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.”
Douglas Adams, Life, the Universe and Everything

J.R.R. Tolkien
“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Robert A. Heinlein
“There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.”
Robert A. Heinlein, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress

Frank Herbert
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
Frank Herbert, Dune

Robert A. Heinlein
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
Robert A. Heinlein
