About this author

We didn't have heat in our house when I was a kid, and that's not one of those "we walked 200 miles uphill to school both ways in a snowstorm" joke. We scorched our pajamas lining up in front of it to get warm on cold mornings. Lo and behold I decided at 5 years old that when I had a family of my own, things would be better for them. A fire inside me developed(no pun intended), and I spent the better part of 18 years struggling in a small town to overcome my personal demons and succeed with crude tools and no guidance.

At the age of 19 I moved to Manhattan where I attended Hunter College and dated the daughter of a fash...more

If I Die Running

First mile down and you’re pumping

through my veins like a drug.

I am lifted.

I am invincible.

Sweat drips; and the faint burn

makes itself at home in my lungs.

The sun sets up ahead,

and it's horizontal light warms me as I run.

Clouds frame little pockets of blue sky above.

Problems shrink and I see everything

through a rose colored lens.

You numb the pain.

I run farther and enjoy you m... read more »

Barefoot in November by Benjamin J. Carey
" Barefoot in November is not the type of book I usually read. Although I have been know to read almost any genre, memoirs and self-help books are probably the ones that I read the least of. The premise for this book sounded interesting, though, and... "

Barefoot in November by Benjamin J. Carey
" Carey's brash prose and honesty should not be taken for "arrogance". His fierceness and ambition are to be admired, and his imperfections are answered with as many instances in which he pours out his heart and shows his sensitive side. I was intri... "

More of Benjamin's books…
“It's amazing how we wake up every day and just take for granted that life will go on. We know the reality that it will end at some point, yet we still wake up every morning believing deeply, that we will live forever.”
Benjamin J. Carey, Barefoot in November

“As the years go by those relationships are tested, and only then do you realize their true nature. Only after they've been tested through weddings, moves, funerals, divorces, births and other stages in life are you able to judge them. Until then, 'best friend', 'good guy', etc are only labels. In the end, it's interesting; often surprising to see the results.”

“The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof.”
