Description:
It started as a simple enough mission: confirm the absence of sentient beings on Emerald 3, set a navigational beacon for future colonists, and return from the cloud-wreathed planet to the freedom of the stars.
Fioran and her copilot survive a violent crash landing only to discover Emerald 3 is inhabited by sentient plantlike creatures whose population would not withstand colonization. Complicating things further, Fioran's inadvertent admission of her attraction to Alohxi, her Kadiosh crewman, technically gives him carte blanche to take her as his lover.
Despite the temptation of entering an intimate relationship with Alohxi, whose empathic ability creates a deep bond between them, Fioran must ensure they repair the craft and return to the starship as soon as possible; a past mission left her with debilitating claustrophobia, which is exacerbated by Emerald 3's permanent cloud cover. But a twist of fate causes Fioran to become inextricably bound to the inhabitants of Emerald 3. Now she must choose between their lives and her own.
