When I've got a story in progress, I go back and read the past few chapters, immersing myself in the story, and that usually gets me back into the swing of things.

Slightly harder to deal with is that blank page. There is so much potential in a blank page it can be hard to know where to take it. Once you know the answer, the solutions is obvious: Write anything. Really, anything. Don't worry about making it great prose. Odds are you're just going to throw it away, but words aren't a limited commodity. Write all you want, you'll make more. If you're stumped for something, write a diary entry. After a while, you'll find the ideas are flowing again, and you can shift gears to a new story.

Another way to deal with writer's block is to stockpile ideas when the inspiration is striking. It is actually pretty easy to have a bunch of ideas ready to be written at any time.(less)

I started out writing tech reviews because that was something I could do. What I learned writing reviews got me ready to write fiction. It takes about 10,000 hours of practice to master any new skill, so get cracking.(less)

There is a big kerfuffle going on in writer’s circles. Actually, it isn’t so much going on as it is going on and on and on… It is one of those arguments that won’t seem to die. This is what usually happens when people are arguing back and forth between two choices that aren’t right for the question. It is like asking what should we have for breakfast and arguing back and forth between tennis sh...

“I only know everything if you ask the right questions.”
Doc Coleman

“Madame Lefoux accepted a cup of tea and sat on another little settee, next to the relocated calico cat. The cat clearly believed Madame Lefoux was there to provide chin scratches. Madame Lefoux provided.”
Gail Carriger, Changeless

“If there was magic in this world, it happened within sight of the three bases and home plate. All the gems in my world that decorated the walls and floors of dragons' lairs, the sword hilts of privileged princes, and crowns worn by emperors and kings, were nothing compared to the beauty and splendor of the diamond in Wrigley Stadium. It wasn't just a yard with dirt, chalk lines, bases, and a small hill in its center. Wrigley was a field of dreams. Dreams of eternal glory for the men who ran to the outfield, who took their respective bases, and prepared for battle against those who would dare enter their hallowed realm. Dreams for the kids in the stands, all wanting to don a uniform, kiss their moms goodbye, and wield their bats as enchanted weapons destined to knock the cover off the ball. And for the adults who had already selected their lot in life, Wrigley made the dreams of past innocence, lost wonder, and the promise that there was something inherently good still left in the world, come true.

Yeah, corny as hell. But all true.”
Tee Morris, The Case of the Pitcher's Pendant: A Billibub Baddings Mystery

“When you're winning, everyone is a fan.”
Scott Sigler, The Starter

“I suspect it may be like the difference between a drinker and an alcoholic; the one merely reads books, the other needs books to make it through the day."

(Interview with The Booklovers blog, September 2010)”
Gail Carriger

“Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.”
Robert A. Heinlein, Stranger in a Strange Land
