"It wasn't easy telling my family that I'm gay. I made my carefully worded announcement at Thanksgiving. It was very Norman Rockwell. I said, 'Mom, would you please pass the gravy to a homosexual?' She passed it to my father. A terrible scene followed."

| I really wish I'd re-read Divergent right before reading this because I was so lost at the beginning of Insurgent, trying to remember what happened in the last book, which faction was which, who was whom. That said, once I finally caught on I was bac...more | |

| This is a great debut and the writing was outstanding. I really connected to Adam - he was definitely my favorite character. By the end of the book, Kenji had really grown on me and I think he may be more of a standout in book two. The first third of...more | |

“I had the strange desire for a giant butterfly net to catch whatever was out there, as if it could be captured so easily.”

“Nothing could be purged without a body—no crying, no exertion, no pills to take away the pain or calm me down. Nothing. Instead, something ballooned inside me until I felt like I might explode. All I could do was sit there and drown in it, wondering why Claire affected me so much, wondering if she always would.”

“You know, there are good reasons to learn how to read. Poetry isn't one of them. I mean, so what if two roads go two ways in a wood? So what? Who cares if it made all that big a difference? What difference? And why should I have to guess what the difference is? Isn't that what he's supposed to say?
Why can't poets just say what they want to say and then shut up?”

“I almost cried. But I didn't, because if you're in seventh grade and you cry while wearing a blue floral cape and yellow tights with white feathers on the butt, you just have to curl up and die somewhere in a dark alley.”

Thanks Jillian! Waiting for a debut release is eerily similar to being pregnant for 9months - except this is more like a 12-month baby. I'm hoping to get some ARCs before the end of the summer. Keep the great posts coming - we all benefit from "thinking" a little more deeply and a little more carefully.
Hi, Courtney! I'm so glad you like the posts on the Book Lantern; it always intrigues me when I hear thoughts from authors about the blog because it's rather a different beast than other YA book blogs out there. Thank you for the kind words. Focusing on important issues in YA is one of our main goals, so I'm glad that resonated with you. I hope you continue to like what you read at the Lantern!-Jillian
P.S. Lest I forget, congratulations with your book! I bet you're clamoring for October to come around so that it will be released out into the world. :)
