About this author

Presumably a person, occasionally a table.

I write stories.

Went to the library and got out some fat fantasy books (Robin Hobb), fat…historicals (Patrick O’Brian), some sf I’ve been meaning to read for a while (Liz Williams) and some SA fic (Kgebetli Moele).

Reading can make me feel guilty sometimes. I love reading, I would much rather spend the day reading than a)writing, b)exercising c)cleaning house (ahahaha) or any thing really. So it makes me feel g...

This Day is a tidal book, it moves with the waves as it gives us Ella's story - a mother without a son, a wife without a husband.

It is a story about how women are expected to shelve their own grief in order to care for others. In this case, the woman

Though the writing felt staccato -almost tripping over itself - at times; even with this narrative tic I rushed through. The story, for all its obliqueness, is pretty linear, but the descriptions are perfect: the drowned cities, Venus/Venice a place ...more

“No matter what the results, it is my choices that define me. And I will fight for them, even when it seems that failure is inevitable. Perhaps most especially then.”
Cat Hellisen, When the Sea Is Rising Red

“In the end, we make our choices on our own. And no matter how stupid they are, we have to live—or die—with what we’ve done. Sometimes choosing our moment of death is the only freedom we have left.”
Cat Hellisen, When the Sea Is Rising Red

“If there’s one thing my mother taught me, it is how to wear the perfect mask. Never show them what you’re really feeling because that’s how they hurt you.”
Cat Hellisen, When the Sea Is Rising Red

“It is, I suppose, the common grief of children at having to protect their parents from reality. It is bitter for the young to see what awful innocence adults grow into, that terrible vulnerability that must be sheltered from the rodent mire of childhood.”
Katherine Dunn, Geek Love

“The girls cannot contain their joy. They must start rehearsing immediately. They teach Saluni a new song that they have composed at the swamps. It is about croaking frogs in their green and brown colours and how the girls caught them and pierced their eyes with sharp sticks and set them free to hop about in wonderful blindness. It is a haunting melody. They tell Saluni that the song is all about the fun they had at the swamps today. The blinded frogs will live peacefully because now they won't be bothered by the bright rays of the sun. They won't have to run from danger, because they won't see it. They will therefore be safe since danger only catches those who run away from it.”
Zakes Mda, The Whale Caller: A Novel

“I had the brief notion that his heart, pressed flat as a flower, crimson and thin as tissue paper, lay in this file. It was a very thin one.”
Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories
