I wanted to write the most entertaining book I knew, especially coming out of a long career/personal slump. This was it.

In fairness, I have gotten very little resistance to the idea, aside from a common reaction at cons: "Oh. Humans and dinosaurs. Creationism, huh?" Which of course is why a Foreword specifying that the book isn't set on Earth.

Also, I have very supportive friends. I am *extremely* fortunate in my friends.

It was in a fairly advanced (if still early) state when I took it to Critical Mass, my writers group. (A number of fellow group members - even as they helped me turn it first readable, and then into a book I'm proud of - became big supporters of the book.)(less)

The characters began to come to me, and with them my story. Occasionally I'll think of a story first and then imagine characters to live it out, but usually my characters help me realize what my story is. And they always inform the way the story turns out.

From there I fleshed it out into a (probably overly detailed) synopsis, and began to fill it in.

That's the hard part....(less)
