About this author

Susan Spence writes about the West, both old and new. She watches the prairie, alive with deer and antelope, eagles and hawks, rabbits and snakes. The animals share an old sheep shearing station with the author and her husband while she tells stories about the people who live there.

There is a lot of advice about marketing books. What makes sense and what doesn't?

Excerpt from A Story of the West (Literature & Fiction)
1 chapters   —   updated Jan 06, 2011 07:35am
Description: A Story of the West is a tale of ranching on the American prairie during the frontier days of the 1880s. It takes place mainly in what was then Montana Territory, before there were fences or laws to prevent people from doing what they pleased. During the early days of ranching, the early day cattlemen ran cattle on as much rangeland as they could control. It was the days of the Wild West, so control usually meant enforcement with a gun. Back Cover: Matt Daly and his father first came to Montana Territory driving a herd of Texas longhorns in the 1880s They, like many others, were determined to make a living on the lawless frontier. Life was hard, but fulfilling, as there was money to be made selling beef to the exploding population back east. When the train came through, it made life easier and it also brought more people. Lavina Lavold rode out with her family seeking adventure, which she found when she met Matt and fell in love. Conflicts were common as there were rustlers who wanted the land they claimed as their own. It didn't matter that the vast prairie still belonged to the federal government.
