The Last Neanderthal by Ian Tattersall

Suffers from that inevitable flaw of most science books - becoming a bit outdated as new research comes out. Still, good to look at and a good introduction, and informative enough if you're keeping up with what's new in general with Neanderthal resea...more

Neandertal Enigma by James Shreeve

An engaging introduction to the sum of Neanderthal research/theory as of a few years ago, and almost as interesting for the look at the people involved in describing early human life and how they arrive at their ideas - so you get a look at the diffe...more

Ice-Age Hunters of the Ukraine by Richard G. Klein

A little dry, and not helped by the visual design; lots of charts and graphs that require a bit of work to decode if you're not familiar. Still a decent amount of information to glean from the book, though.

Bu The Neanderthal Boy by Becky White

Beautifully illustrated, although the amount of new research on Neanderthals since 1941 is huge. Based on (or inspired by?) the old Neanderthal diorama at the Chicago Field Museum.

The Neanderthal Book and Skeleton by Stephen Cumbaa

I thought this book actually did a pretty good job in laying down the basics of known-Neanderthal research at the time, presented in a clear and organized way, with nice visuals. Unfortunately it's out of print and my used copy didn't come with the l...more

A Day with Neanderthal Man by Fiorenzo Facchini

Story-wise this book was pretty basic, but I liked the art it mixed in and the overall setup. The factual sidebar following through how ideas have carried on from the ice age through today weren't involved enough to be effective, I think, and maybe w...more

The Proto-Neolithic Cemetery in Shanidar Cave by Ralph Solecki
Rate this book
Clear rating
This book was a little too technical for my taste - lacking the context of the other Solecki book I read. Essentially a hyper-detailed report of some of Solecki's excavations at the famous Shanidar cave.

-Here's a REALLY pretty one.

-Um, thank you.

“-Some guy stopped by to see you.
-Who was it?
-I don't know.
-You don't know? Was he cute? Did you fall in love with him?”
