About this author

I'm the author of eight novels for adults and young adults, including the Stone duology ("The Arm of the Stone" and "The Garden of the Stone"); the Way of Arata duology ("The Burning Land" and "The Awakened City"); and "Passion Blue," a novel for teens that'll be published in 2012. I've reviewed books for SF Site, Black Gate, and Fantasy magazine, and my articles on writing and how to get published have appeared in Writer’s Digest and elsewhere. In 2006, I served as a judge for the World Fantasy Awards.

I'm an active member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), and co-founder, with Ann Crispin, of Writer Beware, a publishing industry watchdog group that warns about literary schemes and scams. I maintain the Writer Bew...more

Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi
My rating:

A coming-of-age novel that’s a bit slow to start, but ultimately engrossing.

What stands out for me aren’t so much the characters–protagonists Nailer and Nita are complex and believable, but many of the supporting characters are sketchily drawn–or the...more

A haunting YA fantasy by a debut author.

Sexy teenage zombies? Yeah, I was skeptical too. But in Dearly, Departed Lia Habel just about made me believe it.

This is a fun adventure/romance with an intriguingly unusual take on the zombie theme. Yes, there's a zombie plague, with hordes of rave...more

I love C.J. Sansom's Matthew Shardlake Tudor mysteries, and this latest installment, which sets a story of murder, identity theft, ambition, and betrayal in the context of Henry VIII's disastrous final war with France, doesn't disappoint. Sansom has...more

Victoria Strauss I think of it less as being busy, than as fighting a constant fight against laziness...

message 1: by Dd

Dd Little Hi Victoria, You are making me a bit jealous. I pride myself as being one of the busiest people around. I really work at it but I think you are busier. Ha! Thanks for being a friend. I hope you will read Cowboy Food too. Yup, it goes beyond being a cook book. There is History & fiction in it too.
