I got the proverbial fly up my fundament about the floor this week. About 75% of our downstairs (about a thousand square feet) is a light sandy Italian tile that doesn't ever show much dirt. The grout color was "mobe pearl." I don't know what a "mobe" is but for several years now, the only "pearl" that described most of the grout would have been the name of Captain Jack Sparrow's ship.

My favorite gourmet chocolates are those made with Callebaut. And my favorite truffles are Moonstruck. Edible whimsy. So delicious, so fun.But let's face it, 2009 has sucked economically, and as much as we may love the good women in our life, our wallets might go ouch. I've had a couple of questions on what I think are good chocolates that are generally available without having to go to mail order.
First, look up a chocolatier in your town. It'll still be pricey but no shipping and you'd be su...

The amount of technological advance since I've been able to spell technological is huge, even though it's dwarfed by the kind of change my grandparents knew in their lifetimes. Still, I learned to type on a manual typewriter, learned accounting in the manual double-entry world and remember our family phone number from when I was four: "ivy-three" 2863. For a very long time, it was the only number I needed to know.I remember when onion skin and carbon paper died and Post-Its and bar codes came...

Since joining Bella Books as Editorial Director nearly two years ago I've received and reviewed -- and mostly rejected -- hundreds of manuscripts. I've done internal reviews of manuscripts from established authors in preparation for their editing. I've also continued to blog about issues around craft and the business, taking care to separate my two roles to the extent that I can.
Not unexpectedly, there's a marked divergence between the thoughts and advice of a 25+ book novelist versus an acqu...

Update: Since I've received several email requests this week for "that turkey brine thing" I thought I'd repost this April 2008 entry with the recipe.

No doubt others before me have used this fowl pun, and why you may ask am I writing about turkey in April when Thanksgiving is six months away? There's a turkey sitting on my back fence, that's why.
The flock of turkeys that live in the canyon below our house is growing, probably over 25 birds now, including two toms that fan out impressive...

My very first book was published in 1989. That's right -- twenty years ago. In the last century. It could make a person feel old. But I feel grateful. So before I forget, anyone who places an order at BellaBooks.com between now and December 25 will automatically get an email explaining how to download a pdf with two short stories in it. Both stories were previously released, but a lo-o-o-ong time ago, and when they were published nobody knew that I wrote them. So please everyone enjoy Shootin...
