The hardest thing about writing is knowing what to write. Once you know what you want to say, you communicate your idea in the best way you know how. Treblinka Survivor: The life and Death of Hershl Sperling (History)
1 chapters   —   updated Nov 06, 2010 02:43AM
Description: More than 800,000 people entered Treblinka, and fewer than seventy came out. Hershl Sperling was one of them. He escaped. Why then, fifty years later, did he jump to his death from a bridge in Scotland? The answer lies in a long-forgotten, published account of the Treblinka death camp, written by Hershl Sperling himself in the months after liberation and discovered in his briefcase after his suicide. It is reproduced here for the first time. In Treblinka Survivor, Mark S. Smith traces the life of a man who survived five concentration camps, and what he had to do to achieve this. Hershl’s story – which takes the reader through his childhood in a small Polish town to the bridge in faraway Scotland, is testament to the lasting torment of those very few who survived the Nazis’ most efficient and gruesome death factory. The author personally follows in his subject’s footsteps from Klobuck, to Treblinka, to Glasgow.

More of Mark's books…
“They called themselves socialists, and in some ways they were model socialists, fighting for the rights of workers, the way a lot of Europeans are socialists now. They hide behind their fake egalitarian principles, but really nothing has changed. Outwardly, they’re no longer anti-Jewish. Instead they’re now anti-Israel, but they’re still filled with hatred. They have all these grand ideas, with culture and cathedrals and their music, but actually they’re all just hooligans who want to kill people, identical to their anti-Semitic ancestors.”
Mark S. Smith, Treblinka Survivor: The Life and Death of Hershl Sperling

“The process of writing has something infinite about it. Even though it is interrupted each night, it is one single notation, and it seems most true when it eschews artistic devices of any sort.”
Elias Canetti, The Secret Heart of the Clock
