She has been a freelance book copyeditor since 1987, specializing in sf and fantasy, and she worked at The New Yorker for fifteen years, the last six as a Page O.K.'er. “Nouns and verbs are the guts of the language. Beware of covering up with adjectives and adverbs.”
A.B. Guthrie Jr.

Thomas Babington Macaulay
“What a blessing it is to love books as I love them;- to be able to converse with the dead, and to live amidst the unreal!”
Thomas Babington Macaulay, The Selected Letters Of Thomas Babington Macaulay

Stephen King
“A short story is a different thing all together - a short story is like a kiss in the dark from a stranger.”
Stephen King, Skeleton Crew

Samuel Beckett
“I must go on. I can't go on. I'll go on.”
Samuel Beckett

Jonathan Carroll
“A short story is a sprint, a novel is a marathon. Sprinters have seconds to get from here to there and then they are finished. Marathoners have to carefully pace themselves so that they don't run out of energy (or in the case of the novelist-- ideas) because they have so far to run. To mix the metaphor, writing a short story is like having a short intense affair, whereas writing a novel is like a long rich marriage.”
Jonathan Carroll
