Edward - one day old

This isn’t just a random picture of any old baby, looking simultaneously freshly minted and as ancient as time itself as they all seem to, but a special picture of my new nephew!

Edward Haley was born on Monday of this very week to my brother Garth’s wife Rebecca. A healthy 8oz 2lbs, and fairly chilled looking.

For you today, this feature originally published in Death Ray 11, that pits Battlestar Galactica against Blake’s 7 in a tussle for our affections.... Read more of this blog post »
Jack Glass by Adam Roberts
" OK, I'll stick a caveat on this review - Adam Roberts has been very nice about my books, which I suppose leaves me very well disposed to his. However, if I didn't like the book I would just probably lie and tell him I liked it and not bother to re... " Read more of this review »

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
Really very good YA SF, gets right into the heads of its characters. Constrained by its nature, nevertheless very affecting. See my full review in SFX 235.
Champion of Mars by Guy Haley
" Well, the short of it: This was my favorite read of the last couple years. I didn't think it was perfect, by any stretch, but it combined a literary and pulp aesthetic to very interesting effect. What pushed it to a 5-star read was the incredibly... " Read more of this review »

Seal Team 666 by Weston Ochse
Seal Team 666
by Weston Ochse (Goodreads Author)

Kind of fun, but of little substance, and a little repetitive. Ochse knows his military stuff, however. Read my full review in SFX234.

Sirius by Olaf Stapledon
Sirius
by Olaf Stapledon
read in February, 2013
Stapledon's a very rare SF writer in that his books do not date. This one, set and written during World War II, concerns the creation of a highly intelligent "man-dog", and its repercussions.

Sirius is a fantastic reflection on the way dogs think, our...more

Thorns by Robert Silverberg
Thorns
by Robert Silverberg
read in January, 2013
Silverberg puts a bizarre spin on Beauty and the Beast, with alien experiments and vampire empaths. Brilliant characterisation, raises questions on the morality of science and mass entertainment, otherwise a little abrupt, and the narrative at the cl...more

Tower of Glass by Robert Silverberg
Tower of Glass
by Robert Silverberg
read in January, 2013
Brilliant, multilayered work by one of the genre's best. A playful SF take on the tower of Babel. I wish I wrote as well as Robert Silverberg.

“No, but if I were an illegal, experimental replicant hiding the truth of an international conspiracy I would try and put myself out of the way of those investigating it, wouldn't you? I don't think hiding under a bed will be very successful. But, if you've any better idea of what the deadly robot assassin is up to, please feel free to act upon it.”
