About this author

I grew up in the Washington, D.C. area in the 1960s and 70s, at just the right time and place to witness the space race, the American racial and social revolutions, the beginnings of the transistor age, the first color television programs, and America’s 1970s environmental crisis.

I write from my home in Maryland, or wherever I have enough room to write, including on vacations and on the commute to work; I've often been caught banging out chapters on my smartphone when I've had a free minute. I'm well past the time when I would gladly devour Star Trek novels; in fact, I left that era before The Next Generation ever came along. Still, there's a draw to Trek novels... the well-detailed history of Trek lore gives the reader a background univ...more

“Mitaku Oyasin (We are all related)”
― Lakota greeting

“The earth does not belong to us. We belong to the earth.”
Chief Seattle, The Chief Seattle's Speech

“Captain John Sheridan: I wish I had your faith in the universe. I just don't see it.

Delenn: Then I will tell you a great secret, Captain. Perhaps the greatest of them all. The molecules of your body are the same molecules that make up this station , and the nebula outside, that burn inside the stars themselves. We are starstuff. We are the universe made manifest, trying to figure itself out. And as we have both learned, sometimes the universe requires a change of perspective.”
J. Michael Straczynski

“I can't die yet - I haven't seen The Jolson Story!”
Howard Waldrop

“Theirs is the customary human reaction when confronted with innovation: to flounder about attempting to adapt old responses to new situations or to simply condemn or ignore the harbingers of change--a practice refined by the Chinese emperors, who used to execute messengers bringing bad news. The new technological environments generate the most pain among those least prepared to alter their old value structures. The literati find the new electronic environment far more threatening than do those less committed to literacy as a way of life. When an individual or social group feels that its whole identity is jeopardized by social or psychic change, its natural reaction is to lash out in defensive fury. But for all their lamentations, the revolution has already taken place.”
Marshall McLuhan
