“We stand there, quiet. My questions all seem wrong: How did you get so old? Was it all at once, in a day, or did you peter out bit by bit? When did you stop having parties? Did everyone else get old too, or was it just you? Are other people still here, hiding in the palm trees or holding their breath underwater? When did you last swim your laps? Do your bones hurt? Did you know this was coming and hide that you knew, or did it ambush you from behind?”

Ken Hello Edan. Many thanks for adding me as a friend. Good to meet a fellow Chaon fan.

Edan I've been to Walden Pond in the past, Donald, but that time around I just stopped to pose with these dogs, who were hanging out on the sidewalk, leashless and lovely. Their owner told me they were brothers.

Omar doesn't know a thing about this photo, Robert, so keep your mouth shut! When he's jealous his ears droop, and it's pathetic, and none of us can handle it.

message 4: by Paria

Paria So last night, when you said "I've never read Ulysses," I thought you were talking about The Odyssey (what can I say? I was drunk). And I said, "I read it in high school." Only after that appeared to impress you did I realize that you were talking about the James Joyce book. By that point, of course, I was too embarrassed to explain my mistake. So I said, "Yeah...um, excerpts of it...." Ha ha. I'm a bad liar. So, ANYWAY, I do want to read Ulysses. And I do think you should start that book club.
Love, Paria

Ken Baumann I'm very glad we agree on A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and that Chabon thing.

When I read those books, I feel like I need to buy a used bike and move to Brooklyn and wear old sweaters and listen to The Klaxons.

Edan Awww...you guys are the best! It's not that I'm a good writing teacher, but that you guys are such wonderful writing students.
Also
I will return from Squaw Valley with all kinds of new ass-kicking teaching skillz.
