Grew up in Pocomoke City, Maryland where he began painting at the age of 15. He has won numerous awards to include the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration and the Ezra Jack Keats New Illustrator Award. He received a Caldecott Honor as well.

He lives in Harlem, New York.
