EMILY'S CHRISTMAS STOCKING

"We don't sell slippers," replied the cashier.

"Pardon me?" he asked, kinda asshole-ishly.

"We don't sell slippers," she repeated. "This is a hardware store."

"But you sell socks," he yelled, pointing at a display of wool work socks next to the register. "And I need a new pair of slippers!"

I haven't been writing as much here as normal lately because I've been struggling over the past two months with edits to my new book Bring Me To Heaven

Editing the book makes it seem like finishing the book was the easy part.

While putting together and writing this book, I spent a lot of time in denial that I was, in fact, writing a memoir. Rather than a goofy book about ghosts, it became a story about my own ghosts.

Since coming to this realization...

This morning I got up and did something I've been meaning to do for some time: kill off probably the most popular thing I've ever done.

I turned off my Web site that documents the history of music censorship.

(I'd provide a link, but it is, um, gone.)

It started as part of a First Amendment law class I took in 1997. Every student was required to do a "creative project" as part of the final. I did a small six-page Web site called "a brief history of banned music." (Archive.org's Wayback Machine...

"OKAY!!!!!" Everyone! Come to the 3rd floor conference room. Christmas Karaoke is about to begin!!!!!!! Whooo-hooo!!! Come join us!"

This what screamed from the overhead p.a. speaker--while I was in the middle of a phone call--yesterday afternoon.

As part of our holiday celebrations at work, the 3rd floor hosted a karaoke party. They had put up fliers, sent "All Staff" emails, and were now advertising by screaming into the building-wide p.a. system.

"ATTENTION EVERYONE!!! Christmas caroling and...

Our baby is due in two weeks--which means it may come now, or it may come in a month. Who knows.

Every Tuesday since we learned Katherine was pregnant, we've taken a picture of her standing at the top of our stairs. Below is a collection of most of them.

Old habits die hard. I still, every year, keep track of my favorite albums throughout the year. Then I spend an embarrassing amount of time in the final few months pruning the list down to my 10 favorites.

2009 was an odd musical year for my ears. There were lots of "okay" albums, but few really indispensable ones. I question how many on the list below would have made the cut in any other year. The real test is if I will still...

Pixel  The photo to the right is a extremely blown up photo of a rock in the middle of the Devil's Den at the Gettysburg Battlefield.

The white dot in the middle? It isn't a ghost. It isn't a led light. It isn't a reflection.

It is a dead pixel.

Shortly after returning from Gettysburg in August, I discovered that my Canon digital camera has one dead pixel, which always registers bright white, located just to the left of the dead center of the lens.

After some investigation, I learned that (when blown...

I just bought an Xbox.

It cost about $250 bucks.

What was the first game I bought for it?

Solitaire.

In fact, I have bought/acquired a solitaire game for every game system, computer, and piece of electronics I have ever owned where it would even remotely be possible to...

My favorite comment so far: "You're comparing parenthood with being mauled by a wild animal? The analogy is neither funny, nor particularly insightful…"

I actually take comments like this as a compliment--because the reader had the expectation that I would be either (a) funny, or (b) insightful...
