You know that old saw about "1% inspiration, 99% perspiration" ?
It's true. I do like writing in general, but I also try to organize my life in such a way that writing happens whether I like it or not. I usually write in the morning, before it occurs to me that I should be doing something else.

Also, while I'm writing, I don't edit. I don't even fix typos. Editing happens later. That part of the mind involves doubt, and doubt can stop me from writing sometimes, so I try to minimize it while I'm composing.

Lastly, it's great to have at some encouragement. Even cactuses and camels need water, and while "self expression" is important, so is communication. Form a writing group, maybe just with a few friends. Sometimes a deadline is a functional equivalent to inspiration.

If all of this is in place, when that "1%" happens, you'll he able to capitalize on it!(less)

Part of my high school and college music study involved music composition. This was in the late ’80s and early ’90s, and although computers did exist for the purpose of composition, people in my immediate environment weren’t using them. I was instructed, instead, in the “art” of notation, and the tools were a pencil, a pen, a ruler (with pennies taped to the bottom to keep the ink from running)...
