This is a fantastic collection. Pam Houston is my kind of writer.

Really enjoyed reading these high octane, action/espionage stories. Guilty pleasure? Maybe. But fun is fun, wherever one gets it. And some of these writers are among my favorites, and I even discovered a couple more. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Didn't really care for this one. The writing is fine; at times exceptional. I loved the title story, but that's about it. The rest are pretty much all one-note in their depravity, which I don't care for. Maybe I expected too much from all the hype su...more

Even as a fan of The Mighty Gish, I'm still somewhat surprised by how much I enjoyed this collection of linked stories. They remind me of watching the old Kolchak: The Night Stalker series with Darren McGavin as a kid. I don't have many specific memo...more

I love this series, and this may be the best installment yet. I can't wait for the next one. It's high octane, funny, interesting, and a blast to read. The references to pop culture and current events are fantastic. Farnsworth is really firing on all...more

This was a nice break, easily read, and reasonably amusing. Some chapters are better than others, of course. Louis C.K.'s was a big disappointment, a perfect example of the worst of his style of comedy that I like the least. Generally the answers ten...more
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt
" Ok I know no praise as high as - I wish to hell I had written this book. What a stunning novel. deWitt does an amazing hat trick of having his story wander all over the place and yet always feel like it is headed somewhere, not at all where you ex... "

This was my introduction to Matthew Scudder, and the most extensive reading of Block's work that I have engaged in. I don't come away disappointed at all. I particularly love the cast of characters that move through the stories, and Scudder in partic...more

I've been slowly making my way through this collection as part of my short story reading project for the year, and I'm sad to have finished it. Pulling a tale out of this one was always sure to cleanse the palate of something from somewhere else that...more
