SUSAN ELIZABETH PHILLIPS

The Huffington Post says the books of Susan Elizabeth Phillips provide a “gateway drug to the whole [romance] genre,” which she assumes is a good thing. Bookpage magazine calls her “the crown jewel of romantic comedy writers,” which is definitely a good thing. New historical romance discoveries have been Sarah MacLean and Tessa Dare. Women's fiction--not a new discovery since I've been reading her for years, but Kristin Hannah's new book, THE NIGHTINGALE. (Pack tissues. Very, very moving.) I've only recently discovered Liane Moriarty's books and am enjoying them. As for old favorites, who can beat Jennifer Crusie and Jayne Ann Krentz. In Y.A., I raced through all the Harry Potters and Hunger Games books. I'm pretty much a book slut! In the best possible way, of course. (less)

Quirky and courageous with an absolutely fascinating structure. A few elements of magical realism. This would be a terrific book club book. It will especially resonate with Midwesterners. (Not a romance.)

I keep this lovely book by my bed as a reminder that my yoga practice is about more than being able to a headstand. Which I can’t do and, frankly, don’t care about doing. So much wisdom inside its cover.
