About this author

Crystal Belle is a poet and English teacher in Brooklyn, New York. Her travels took her throughout West Africa, South America, Europe and the Caribbean. Since completing her fellowship, Belle has been worked in the journalism industry and is now an English teacher. She performs at several performance poetry events in New York City on a regular basis. She recently published her first collection of poetry, Woman on Fire, which captures themes such as body image, self-love, urban education, feminism and Africa/Diaspora relations. John Updike
“We are fated to love one another; we hardly exist outside our love, we are just animals without it, with a birth and a death and constant fear between. Our love has lifted us up , out of the dreadfulness of merely living. ”
John Updike, Brazil: A Novel

James Baldwin
“Those kids aren't dumb. But the people who run these schools want to make sure they don't get smart: they are really teaching the kids to be slaves.”
James Baldwin, If Beale Street Could Talk

“Neither love nor terror makes one blind: indifference makes one blind.”
James Baldwin, If Beale Street Could Talk

Arundhati Roy
“There is a war that makes us adore our conquerors and despise ourselves.”
Arundhati Roy, The God of Small Things

Mao Tse-tung
“A revolution is not a dinner party, or writing an essay, or painting a picture, or doing embroidery; it cannot be so refined, so leisurely and gentle, so temperate, kind, courteous, restrained and magnanimous. A revolution is an insurrection, an act of violence by which one class overthrows another.”

Mel Chris The Memoirs of JR Holden is unique, in part, due to the humble nature of this star athlete. And the story he tells is one of hope, inspiration, faith, courage, and belief. JR tells this story without hiding or covering up any of his pit falls or short comings along the way. You will put this book down genuinely sensing the passion this young man lives life with. This is truly a great read for anyone who enjoys cheering for the underdog.
