About this author

My parents, who grew up in China, had no favorite books from their childhood to share with me, which left me to my own devices in the library. When I mentioned this to a friend, she was a bit stunned, and I understood this reaction. I certainly never felt deprived as a child, but as a parent, it's hard to imagine not having that link.

My own book is about finding the stories we discover about our families and how we are changed by them. I hope my book inspires its readers to find the powerful stories, both great and small, in their own families.

I picked this book up on a lark at a used book sale - lucky me. This book is part medical mystery and part memoir - as readers, we are fortunate to know that the story turns out happily because the subject is the author. Cahalan was a hotshot journal ...more

While I've read many books that mention alcoholism, I don't think any book has made me feel like I understand alcoholism like this one. Burroughs' memoir aches with longing for drink, even as he realizes how destructive it is. He is unsparing in his ...more

I'm not sure how it is that I haven't read this book before now, but I'm grateful for the friend who put this book in my hands. A Holocaust survivor's story, told in stunning detail, through his son, whose relationship becomes a part of the story.

Enjoyable essays - some passages I want to frame and hang somewhere prominently.

“Demons run when a good man goes to war
Night will fall and drown the sun
When a good man goes to war

Friendship dies and true love lies
Night will fall and the dark will rise
When a good man goes to war

Demons run, but count the cost
The battle's won, but the child is lost”
