About this author

Anita Bartholomew is a former long-time contributing editor to Reader’s Digest whose articles have also appeared in numerous other major periodicals. She is the the author of the novel, The Midget's House,co-author of Dr. Yvonne Thornton’s award-winning memoir, Something To Prove (Kaplan 2010), and has acted as an editorial consultant to a great many other authors, including some whose books have made the bestseller lists.

When Anita bought her home in Sarasota, Florida, neighbors repeated all sorts of legends to her about it: That it was built for Ringling Circus midgets... that there is a treasure hidden inside its walls... that it is haunted.

Anita searched newspaper archives and rare old books for clues to the house’s origins. She questi...more

This weekend, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune ran a long article aboutTHE MIDGET’S HOUSE — the novel and the real house that provided the inspiration. You can read the full article here.

Here’s an excerpt.

…the old gossip about the origins of the house did spark the idea for Anita’s novel. What if the disquiet spirit of a lovely and tragic midget circus performer did inhabit the house? What if she...

This is a well-written book about characters you know already if you've read about America in the early 1800s. Patrick Henry is central as is John Marshall. One of Thomas Jefferson's daughters makes an appearance.

Schein took an obscure murder case o...more

Riordan isn't a great writer, but he's a fun storyteller, He weaves Greek myth with modern times very effectively for a highly entertaining, if forgettable, read.
More of Anita's books…
“It's strange, isn't it, how you never know you're living the best time of your life at the moment you're living it? If you could appreciate, at that instant, that this is it, maybe you'd make certain your mind imprinted every detail of the sights, smells, sounds and sensations.
Then again, maybe knowing that life will only get duller, sadder, less hopeful afterward would inject melancholy into that moment. You'd miss life's peak experience by mourning it before it passes.
So perhaps it's best not to know.”
