Danny Schnitzlein's Blog: Danny Schnitzlein's Monstrous Blog

February 27, 2012

Okay friends, this is my first blog post ever, so go easy on me. Yeah, I know I'm late getting to the blog thing.

I attended the SCBWI Southern Breeze Springmingle conference this past weekend in Atlanta. It was wonderful to see old friends and make some new ones. I attended Kirby Larson's YA novel writing intensive on Friday, and had a blast! Kirby is a Newbery Honor winner for her wonderful book "Hattie Big Sky." She gave us all some great ideas for tweaking manuscripts and pushing them to a higher level. Also, she's a super nice person. Word is she's working on a sequel for Hattie.

SCBWI stands for Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. It's a wonderful organization for published writers and for those trying to get published. You'd be hard pressed to find a friendlier bunch in an Irish pub. If you're trying to get published, you really need to search out your local SCBWI chapter.

Watched the Oscars last night. My favorite moment: the Wizard of Oz focus group. Christopher Guest, Fred Willard, Eugene Levy, and Kathryn O'Hara played a bunch of nitwits commenting on a pre-release screening of the Wizard of Oz movie. If you are an artist of any sort, or involved in the tv or movie business, try to find this clip. Maybe it's on Youtube? You will laugh your ruby slippers off.

One of the best books I've read recently is Tom Franklin's "Crooked Letter Crooked Letter." I really enjoyed the story, the characters, and the prose. Try it out and let me know what your opinion. Oh, and by the way, it's not a children's book.

Okay, that's it for blog number one. (sigh of relief) Actually, that was a lot of fun! Kind of weird having a one sided conversation, but hopefully you're still there. Thanks for listening. More to come. :-)
