Graham Hettlinger is a translator of Russian literature. His most recent publication is "Childhood," by Maksim Gorky, which appeared in November, 2010 from Ivan R. Dee, Chicago. Mr. Hettlinger's other translations include "The Collected Stories of Ivan Bunin" (2007), "The Elagin Affair and Other Stories" (2005), and "Sunstroke and Other Stories" (2002).

Mr. Hettlinger's translations of Ivan Bunin have been critically acclaimed for their careful rendering of Bunin's poetic style and tone in English. In its starred review of "The Collected Stories of Ivan Bunin," Publishers Weekly wrote, "Russian exile Bunin (1870–1953), who won the Nobel Prize in 1933, becomes stunningly accessible in this beautiful new translation."

Translation, of course, is key, and now, 50 years after his death, this master stylist who wrote of lives in transition with a mordant mix of extravagant romanticism and quintessentially modern skepticism has finally found his match in Hettlinger."

Equally positive reviews of Hettlinger's translations have appeared in the Washington Post, Boston Globe, New York Daily Sun, Library Journal, Kirkus, and the Journal of Slavic and East European Studies.

Reviewing Hettlinger's new translation of Maksim Gorky's "Childhood," Russian Life Magazine wrote: "Gorky's writing brims with a gritty, hard-edged realism that is as powerful and unsettling today as it was 100 years ago. And in this new translation of Childhood, which many Russians count as their favorite among Gorky's writings, Graham Hettlinger - whose translations of Bunin are brilliant - continues to prove his skill as one of our most gifted translators from Russian."

Hettlinger completed an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Virginia, where he studied with the poet Charles Wright, and an M.A. in Slavic Langauges and Literatures at the Ohio State University, where he completed his Master's thesis on the theoretical and practical problems of translating Ivan Bunin. He lived and worked in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia for three years. He currently works at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
