<div>As CEO of General Electric for the past twenty years, Jack Welch built its market cap by more than $450 billion and established himself as the most admired business leader in the world. His championing of initiatives like Six Sigma quality, globalization, and e-business have helped define the modern corporation. At the same time, he's a gutsy boss who has forged a unique philosophy and an operating system that relies on a "boundaryless" sharing of ideas, an intense focus on people, and an informal, give-and-take style that makes bureaucracy the enemy.
</div></div>

Al Dunlap was so ruthless in downsizing corporations for short-term shareholder profit that he earned nicknames such as "Chainsaw Al" and "Rambo in Pinstripes." Wall Street loved Dunlap at Scott Paper, where he laid off thousands, but then hated him at Sunbeam, where he himself was finally fired. Chainsaw, by Business Week writer John A. Byrne, dramatically documents the rise and fall of Dunlap, the havoc he wreaked on companies and people's lives, and how he came to power in the first place.
"Chainsaw Al was a creation of the Street and its ceaseless lust for profit at any cost. He came of age when the market routinely rewarded layoffs with lofty stock prices. The more people he tossed out in the street, the higher stock values went," writes Byrne, who cites "cutthroat investors" such as Michael Price and Ronald Perelman for helping Dunlap's rise. Superbly written and researched, the book vividly describes characters and scenes, and reveals the fictions that Dunlap told about himself. How cold was Chainsaw Al? Byrne writes that Dunlap never even attended the funerals for his mother and father. Byrne also tells the story of the questionable accounting and business practices that ultimately brought down Sunbeam and Dunlap, and the investigations that led to a restatement of the company's finances. Dunlap, unhappy about Byrne's reporting, once said of the Business Week writer, "If he were on fire, I wouldn't piss on him." It's a quote that Byrne uses to kick off his last chapter. Chainsaw is a compelling read for those interested in the inner workings of Wall Street and business, or just a well-told story.

--Peter Felixberger

The electronic call auction is an important trading vehicle in many market centers around the world, and it should play a far more central role in the U.S. equity markets. Yet call auctions are not known or understood by many market participants in the U.S. The purpose of Call Auction Trading: New Answers to Old Questions is to consider how a call auction facility operates and its broader role in the marketplace. A spectrum of questions are raised and debated. What is a call auction? How should call auctions be designed? How should call auction and continuous trading be integrated in a hybrid market structure? What is the price discovery function of a call auction, especially at market openings? When the dust settles on the answers, it may be recognized that the introduction of electronic call auction trading in our markets is one of the most profound changes in U.S. equity market structure that could be made.

The sequence of securities markets conferences at Baruch College's Zicklin School of Business in New York City are recorded in this popular series. The conferences are hosted by the college for industry professionals, regulators and academicians. These books are much more than historical documents. The transcripts from the conferences were carefully edited for clarity, perspective and context. Materials were included from subsequent interviews with the panelists and speakers. Each book is focused on a well delineated topic, but all deliver broader insights into the quality and efficiency of the U.S. equity markets and the dynamic forces changing them.

The NASDAQ Stock Market has been reengineered in recent years from a competitive dealer market to a modern hybrid. The broader NASDAQ marketplace, including ECNs and ATSs, has also experienced substantial growth and development. This conference brought together leading buy-side and sell-side participants and NASDAQ executives to put these changes into sharper focus. The resulting book assesses both the current market structure and the direction in which the new NASDAQ marketplace is heading.

This book is based on the proceedings of a one-day conference on Market Quality, held at the Zicklin School of Business on April 30, 2002. Some of the questions addressed in this book are: How should market quality be defined, measured, monitored and improved? What is the evidence about the current state of our markets? How effective have recent innovations been? How can we better meet our investor needs?

Two primary drivers have transformed the equity markets in recent years: technological advances and regulatory initiatives. How does modern, electronic technology facilitate trading, and to what extent does it present new challenges? How does regulation adjust to the changing structure of the markets, and to what extent is it itself a source of change? What are the new problems and solutions for handling institutional orders? On both sides of the Atlantic, what are the overall impacts of technology and regulation on market quality? The conference resulting in this volume brought together buyside and sellside practitioners, regulators, and academicians to address these and related issues.
