About this author

Cassandra Chan has published four novels, most recently A Spider on the Stairs, and several short stories featuring Gibbons and Bethancourt. She lives in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

It's last week, and I get a call from Crissie, who is fussed because her husbandish, Shaun, has been abruptly called away on a business trip to Arkansas where it is apparently snowing. Crissie grew up in Florida and she has a deep-seated distrust of winter weather.

"Shaun won't listen to me," she complains. "He keeps saying that it's only a couple of inches, so they'll plow and everything will b...

Cassandra Cassandra said: "This is one of Crissie's all-time favorites from long ago. I'm liking it so far, and it certainly does very well when my brain is just too tired to parse "Christianity: the first 3,000 years." "

Way of Kings was my favorite book the year it came out, and I can't imagine anything this year will top Words of Radiance. I adore this series--it does it for me in a way few epic fantasies do these days. I'm not sure why, but I can't recommend it hi...more

This book is pure fun. I don't read very fast these days, or have much time to read in, but I finished this in three days. If you don't like Jane Austen, you might not like it, but otherwise I can't see anyone not enjoying this.

Love this series. I've been reading less and less mystery as the years roll on, but this is one I keep up with. Thought towards the end I saw some hints about the end of the series--will be interesting to see if I'm right.

Read this years ago when it first came out & loved it. Re-read it any number of times. Story and characters are great, and the city of Tai-Tastigon really comes to life.
"Famous first line:

"It was a pleasure to burn."

More of Cassandra's books…
“Gibbons wondered vaguely if he was becoming a morphine addict. He had certainly dosed himself into a stupid on account of the hideous pain resulting from the nurse's insistence that he get up and sit in a chair. He rather thought that being a drug addict would interfere with his career as a police detective, but that didn't seem to matter as much as it had a little while ago.”
Cassandra Chan, Trick of the Mind

“I hate this case,' stated Gibbons unequivocally. 'I don’t know what really happened, I shall probably never know what really happened, and I shall still be a detective sergeant when I’m sixty.”
Cassandra Chan, Village Affairs
