About this author

Cassandra Chan has published four novels, most recently A Spider on the Stairs, and several short stories featuring Gibbons and Bethancourt. She lives in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

I read something awhile ago that's been niggling at me ever since. It has to do with the last Harry Dresden book, "Ghost Story" by Jim Butcher. It was this guy's opinion that the series had jumped the shark with this book, basically because the book didn't push the overall story further, it was just about Harry dealing with being dead, and everyone else dealing with Harry being dead, too.

The Elvenbane

Cassandra Cassandra said: "This is one of Crissie's all-time favorites from long ago. I'm liking it so far, and it certainly does very well when my brain is just too tired to parse "Christianity: the first 3,000 years.""

Watching the English by Kate Fox
I'm an unabashed anglophile, and if you're one, too, this is a great read. Full of dry British wit, it delineates a lot of those odd British mannerisms you've noticed. It also explained some that I'd misread entirely. Very enjoyable.

Hair Care Rehab by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy
This book is bloody marvelous. She describes simply and effectively what's up with your hair, what's good for it, what's bad for it, and how best to take care of it. She also has small, separate sections for all kinds of different issues you may have...more

I really liked this book. Excellent, really imaginative sf with interesting science and fantastic aliens. They talk with smells, just for a start, and the smell-language is remarkably well thought out. The characters are solid, real people. Daniels d...more

Whispers Under Ground by Ben Aaronovitch
I really liked this book. It's a light, fun read and it combines that peculiarly British mystery genre with urban fantasy just perfectly. Mostly it's the voice of Peter Grant that makes it work--one can absolutely relate to him, and he's funny into t...more

French Kids Eat Everything by Karen Le Billon
I found this book fascinating. The way the author describes the French way of eating matches very closely the way I was brought up. And the way many Americans were brought up if my informal questioning of my older friends can be counted. No snacks, p...more

This is a bloody brilliant book. I loved it. You will love it, too. It is now my official prediction for the NYT fall & Christmas bestseller list.

It's beautifully crafted. Practically every chapter is a single scene, and a lot of time passes betw...more

“Gibbons wondered vaguely if he was becoming a morphine addict. He had certainly dosed himself into a stupid on account of the hideous pain resulting from the nurse's insistence that he get up and sit in a chair. He rather thought that being a drug addict would interfere with his career as a police detective, but that didn't seem to matter as much as it had a little while ago.”
Cassandra Chan, Trick of the Mind

“I hate this case,' stated Gibbons unequivocally. 'I don’t know what really happened, I shall probably never know what really happened, and I shall still be a detective sergeant when I’m sixty.”
Cassandra Chan, Village Affairs
