Shirley Marr is an Australian author of contemporary Young Adult fiction who specialises in “writing about and for Little Lady Macbeths”. She arrived on the scene in 2010 when her manuscript was plucked out of a slush pile and published by Black Dog Books (now an imprint of Walker Books). The resulting novel, Fury, is a dark and funny murder story narrated by a petulant sixteen-year-old mean girl and has been described as “like Heathers as directed by Sofia Coppola” and developed a cult following.

Her difficult second novel, Preloved, was published in 2012 and is a paranormal love story for girls who don’t like paranormal love stories. It marks a departure from her dark roots and showcases the “B Side” of Shirley – which is closer to her own

I am proud to announce the new arrival in my life – a big bouncing baby boy (4.03kg!) called William! As I will be devoting my time looking after him, another novel in the foreseeable future might be a while coming as I start this new chapter of my life :-)

“I swapped my heart for a bargaining chip a long time ago. And here I am turning it over and over again in my hand, not sure what to trade it in for.”
Shirley Marr, Fury

“I walked up to the window, raised my palm and pressed it against the pane. It left a bloodied handprint. Through the red shape—my red flag, my riot sign—I could see Neil staring at me.”

“So it is just you and your friends then.”

“Yes. Is that so hard to believe?” Is it because we’re girls? I want to say. You think a bunch of girls are not capable of something like this?

Carolyn Crane Hey Shirley! Thanks so much for friends invite and the kind words on the buttons. It was a fun way to blow off steam, and if it helps even just one person help see the craziness of that behavior, then I'm happy. All my best on your books!

message 187: by Ariana

Ariana Thank you for your kind words, they mean so much to me :)
I've been meaning to read 'The Book Thief' and you gave me one more reason to do so. Also I can't wait to read 'Fury' (maybe I'll start with it).
Thanks as well for the friendship and happy writing! ;)

message 183: by Jess

Jess Thanks for the add, Shirley!! :) I think it's awesome that you're an author but you review so many YA Aussie books, and chat with us Aussies too :D

message 182: by Max

Max I prefer the term 'a-random-unicorn-and-chocolate-obsessed-bookworm', but thanks! ^_^ Just call me Max, since you seem like a nice person, and I like being friends with nice people. Well, who doesn't?

And I'm totally jealous of that fact that you're an Aussie. Not only do you have cool accents, you get other books that the rest of the blogging world are dying to have easily. I got lucky with Fury, since my friend happened to have a copy <.O

message 181: by Ten

Ten sure thing, thank you for accepting! :) hoping to read your books asap :D <3

message 180: by Blue

Blue I'm so happy that you accepted! It seemed like only something I could hope for, haha!

Your package was something I eagerly awaited, and it's still prettier than I imagined. You've got such a cute handwriting! And in pink too! Thank you! :)

message 179: by Crystal

Crystal Aw thanks for accepting! =D

message 178: by Catie

Catie OMG, Shirley what IS that chocolate bar you sent me? Jellies, m&m's, and...POP ROCKS?!!!!! You Aussies are MAD with your chocolate. I loved it! My little girls kept elbowing each other out of the way to steal bites.

message 177: by Catie

Catie Shirley! Thank you so much for the lovely note and the CHOCOLATE. The bilbies are sooooo precious! I won't be able to eat them (for at least a few days)! Your upcoming project sounds really interesting - I love stories that go a bit dark! Can't wait!

message 176: by Lissa

Lissa Well I haven't read Fury yet, but Preloved sounded more like my kind of thing, so that's why I chose that one.

message 175: by Lissa

Lissa I ordered Preloved from my local Dymocks today! *flail*

Taneika (Flipping Through The Pages...) So I'm a bit silly and am going through old copies of the West for an assignment, I JUST saw the review for Preloved and I got a bit overexcited so I made a blog post about it haha! Just thought I'd let you know :)

message 172: by Tina

Tina Hi Shirley! Yay indeed for our new friendship! :)

message 171: by Laura

Laura Sigh. I know. It must be a character flaw or something. I also have issues with fictional books related to the Holocaust. Which is silly, but it is what it is.

message 170: by Laura

Laura Hi Shirley! Thanks for friending! I've seen you around quite a bit! And I would totally love to read your books (I'm not just saying that, I check
Amazon for them once a week), but I can't seem to get them where I live. I will somehow get them eventually, though!

Katherine Thanks for accepting my request! I'm sure The Book Thief will grow on me :)
