Shirley Marr is an Australian author of contemporary Young Adult fiction who specialises in “writing about and for Little Lady Macbeths”. She arrived on the scene in 2010 when her manuscript was plucked out of a slush pile and published by Black Dog Books (now an imprint of Walker Books). The resulting novel, Fury, is a dark and funny murder story narrated by a petulant sixteen-year-old mean girl and has been described as “like Heathers as directed by Sofia Coppola” and developed a cult following.

Her difficult second novel, Preloved, was published in 2012 and is a paranormal love story for girls who don’t like paranormal love stories. It marks a departure from her dark roots and showcases the “B Side” of Shirley – which is closer to her own

Nic Hi Shirley :)

Shirley Marr Hi Nic! Nice to see you on goodreads :)

Sangria Thanks for your friendship, Shirley! :D

Wendy Darling Thanks so much for your friendvite, Shirley. Funnily enough, I've been dying to read Fury thanks to some of my enthusiastic GoodReads friends, and even have a touring copy on its way to me soon! I look forward to staying in touch with you here. But I am curious what led to your being thrown out of a bookstore...

Shirley Marr "Friendvite" - I love it Wendy! Must use newly acquired word. I hope Fury is nice to you when she arrives:) Hopefully we end up reading the same books so we can compare reviews and you can go "ugh! I can't believe you love that book! Such bad taste" As for the being-thrown-out-of-large-bookstore-chain-no-longer-in-existence, I've decided I'll write about it as my own review for Fury so watch that space:) xx

Wendy Darling Hm, cryptic! But it will make for an excellent review, I'm sure. ;)

message 7: by Romy

Romy Hey Shirley, thanks so much for the friend request! You've probably heard this before but I just loved your book it was fab, your also pretty fab as well I might add. I know this was ages ago but I actually saw you speak at the Melbourne Writers Festival last year and I just want to say that your talk was one of my favourites, so I hope you'll do one again!

Shirley Marr Hey Romy!! Aww really? I was so sucky at the MWF10. I was kinda jetlagged and had a cold and I remember flirting with James West (dammit!) Promise you I'll be more sparkly next time and please come up to me and give me a hug!

Reynje Hi Shirley, thank you so much for the friend request! I was going to send one, but I was too shy :)

I'm very excited to chat books with you (because that's what all the cool kids do, right?) Reynje

message 10: by Shirley

Shirley Marr Aww Reynje no need to be shy, you'll realise soon enough I'm just a dag :) But I look forward to chatting books (and at least over the interwebs you won't have to try and understand my Perth accent!)

message 11: by Reynje

Reynje Just quietly - I actually have a Queensland accent :) Occasionally a nice, long, drawly "pool" or "cool" slips out and all my Melbourne friends give me strange looks...

message 12: by Shirley

Shirley Marr Lol Reynje! Everyone on the whole east coast refers to "rounds of sandwiches" don't they? The first time I heard that I didn't understand what it meant, I thought maybe they were special circle sandwiches or something!

message 13: by Reynje

Reynje Lol.. Yes, round sandwiches to go with the banana bending!

message 14: by Lara

Lara Morgan oi, right back at ya, Perth girl! Representin... hilarious we sound so street and cool. Let's high five and stuff. *snort.white and nerdy.*

message 15: by Taneika

Taneika Thanks for approving! It's awesome to see a successful YA author from Perth! Jealous!!

message 16: by Jo

Jo Thanks for the add, Shirley.
Like I could say no to a lady who loves Ed!
I can't wait to chat books (also delicious baked treats) with you.

message 17: by Lora

Lora Thank you for the friend request, Shirley! I've seen you around a lot, as well, and I've read quite a few of your reviews.

I look forward to chatting with you and reading more of your reviews. :)

message 18: by Bonnie

Bonnie I believe that's a great idea, Shirley. :D

Thanks for the add, I look forward to talking to you more!

All the best,

Lalaine *myficbookreviews* Hi Shirley! thanks for accepting my request and I so loved your book FURY. I got a review about it on my website. One of the first reviews I ever posted. :)

ps. You are awesome. x

message 23: by Catie

Catie Thanks for the request Shirley! I really like what you wrote about being a reader AND a writer. I really respect that. Look forward to seeing what you're reading (and writing). :)

message 24: by Reynje (last edited Nov 07, 2011 05:57PM)

Reynje But do you double-dare me?? PHYSICAL CHALLENGE! (I can't believe I remember that...

Look at me: staring off into the distance pensively.. looking for my lost words.. concocting ballads..

message 25: by Flannery (last edited Nov 07, 2011 05:20PM)

Flannery I got the comment on my profile notification but not one for accepting the friendship offer. I was having heart palpitations.

And don't get too big a head about your stalking abilities--I'm ace at it. (but I'm open to being partners in crime) #6 on this list is totally true about me. The things people share on Facebook and Twitter are disgusting.

message 26: by Reynje

Reynje Your wish is my command! Be free, Ronan, be free!

message 27: by Brooke

Brooke You know what's annoying? I saw your book everywhere when I wasn't able to buy it, and now that I can, I can't find a darn copy! #frustration.

You're just too popular ;o)

Ordering it is!

message 28: by Aleeeeeza (last edited Nov 11, 2011 06:34PM)

Aleeeeeza hello, shirley! i'm kind of surprised i didn't add you yet--we seem to have loads of books in common and your reviews are quite nice, but i must've forgotten or something. (can't say i'm surprised--it's exam time, after all. :D)

anyway, i look forward to talking books with you!

Aleeeeeza also, i think it's so coolio you live in perth! that place is real high on my 'must visit if i ever can' list. :)

Wendy Darling I just put together a little package for you that I'm sort of happy about. :D I'll send you a note when I've actually made it to the post office so that you know to expect it!

Aleeeeeza Ha! No, I actually don't think myself a fan of any of those things, but the beaches in Perth--they are STUNNING.

and yeah, reading and writing definitely adds some much-needed color in my drab accounting-filled life. can't wait to be done with the certification!

message 32: by Reynje

Reynje Mel B's face after Johnny Ruffo's second song - yeah, you can thank me later :)

Wendy Darling All righty, I mailed off your package today! They say it will take 6 -10 business days, so be on the lookout. :)

message 34: by Jasprit

Jasprit Hey Shirley thank you so much for the friend request, you have so made my day :D

I've seen you on the feeds a while, so it's awesome finally to be friends with you. I'm on the Team Limajaritjomia tour for your book so super excited to be reading it!

Look forward to chatting books and "stuff" :)

message 35: by Steph

Steph Sinclair Thank you so much for the friend request and the compliment! "Crush-inducing writing." *Dies*
That was super sweet of you. :)

I am dying to read Fury. It has been eluding me for quite some time. Thankfully, I should get a chance to read it during Wendy's tour.

I'm sure we will be great friends! ^_^

message 36: by Steph

Steph Sinclair *frolicks through the meadow arm and arm with Shirley*

message 37: by Lisa

Lisa Thanks for the friend request. I would have added you sooner but I thought we were already friends. I've been enjoying your reviews for a while. :)

Wendy Darling My feed has been taken over by the approximately 3.2 zillion friends who have become friends of Shirley! Are you handing out chocolate lollies and offering unicorn rides again?

Wendy Darling Hah hah, you know I'm just kidding, right? I adore you and your reviews, it was only a matter of time before the wondrousness that is Shirley was appreciated by others. :D

Cillian, the way Shirley is on GoodReads is a great indicator for the way she is as an author, too--smart, funny, and unforgettable. ;) You'll totally love Eliza.

message 40: by Reynje

Reynje So: Salt N Pepa last night. I didn't know whether to just hyperventilate or put my gold lycra tights on and dance around the room singing into the remote :)

message 41: by Hira

Hira Haha, thanks for accepting! Look forward to chatting books :)

Wendy Darling Hi Shirley! Guess what arrived yesterday. :D We weren't around for most of the day so I just opened the package this evening. Thank you so much for sending Miss Eliza along! I will be posting the tour info very shortly, let's see where we can send her on her tour of the United States. :)

message 43: by Reynje

Reynje Shirley wrote: "Happy Birthday Rey da Babe! I hope you get some books as pressies. Either way I know that your party soundtrack will be absolutely crankin!!

Thank you lovely! I will definitely be pulling out my boy-band dance moves and turning up some Salt N Pepa :) Hugs!

message 44: by Jo

Jo Dear Shirley,
If I find out that you do not write your books with a typewriter balanced delicately on your lovely-stockinged knee, I will be docking a star when I write my review for Fury.

You have been warned,

ps. What are you drinking? If it's champagne out of a teacup I will give you INFINITE STARS.

Kat Kennedy Love your author picture. Definitely a Melbourne girl, aren't you! All style and glamour! My author photo would have a picture of me drinking sour whiskey and putting a fiver in a male strippers G-string while simultaneously trying to get a stain out of my wife beater.

Kat Kennedy Kat - go take this photo and replace your profile pic straight away. And *ahem* I would like to volunteer to go to this special place with the male strippers and take the photo for you

Dude, next time you're in Sydney or I'm...wherever you live... it's a lady date! We'll hit the clubs with purses full of five dollar notes and get a picture of me looking as seedy as possible.

Annabelle Marie Veronica Oh yes, of course! Thank you for accepting my friend request! ♥♥

Wendy... what can I say? I dun deserve so much... GOODIES"

Yay, I'm glad it made it there safely! I hope your chocolates haven't melted en route. I sent you the Special Edition Cherry Hersheys Kisses since I know you like cherry, and I figured I could always send you regular ones later on.

Hope you enjoy! I refuse to take the bill from your dentist, though. ;)
