Dear Readers, the Miami Book Fair was terrific!  Was I there? I'm not sure.

I staggered up at 5.30 on the morning of Sunday, Novembr 8, having flown back from Chicago the day before in order to go to a wonderful concert for the Silver Anniversary of the Canadian Opera Company – at which we stayed up late. Stumbled onto the plane, on which I fell asleep. Wandered around in the new terminal in a zombieish  manner until I was finally located by the lovely Music Express driver, who de-podded me...

Every year, Bonnie Stern of Cooking with Bonnie Stern (www.bonniestern.com) selects a certain number of authors and their books. She reads the books, marking all the food passages in the text. Then she concocts recipes that go with the books. The walls of her enclave on Erskine Avenue in Toronto have many authors pictured with food and/or books. People sign up for the dinners, the authors speak, and then we eat. Bonnie provides the recipes for the dishes. which I'll insert here when I get...

Hello Twitterers: There were a lot of entries, with much variety. Hard to choose! Therefore, instead of picking just five winners I have picked the ones I thought were the most telling in three different categories, for a total of eleven. I have also added an Honourable Mention, and a longer analysis by Lidwien Biekmann, the Dutch translator of The Year of the Flood. Thank you all for entering.

How to collect your prize:  Post a Comment to this Blog with your address on it. Only I will be...

After the by-now-familiar 6.15 pickup and five hours of flying, I was picked up at the Austin airport by first-time Escort Jill Wilkinson, who was doing this task as a volunteer for the enormously popular Texas Book Festival – started by Laura Bush when she was the Governor's First Lady. ("Governess?" No, I guess not. Not Jane Eyre.)

By this time I was toppling over with fatigue, but Jill was more than friendly and helpful, and so were all the folks in the Omni Austin Hotel, who'd been to...

On October 29, it was up in the morning, hot on the job, work like the devil, etc. –  beginning at 6.15am, arriving at Penn Station to find none of my books at the bookstore there, what a thrill. Did get a horrid muffin though. (This s the glamorous part. You can see in the pic how bagged-out we are…)  Then an Amtrak train to Washington, during which I tried to catch up on my blog postings, a futile effort…It's like  Sisyphus, you just keep rolling that stone uphill, and it keeps rolling...
