I am a writer, educator, businessperson and former Central Intelligence Agency senior operations officer. After receiving a master's degree at Stanford University, I wrote my first non-fiction book, "The McCarthy Era: 1950-1954 - Was American Society Threatened?" while teaching high school in Cupertino, California. Following two tours of duty in Vietnam as a U.S. Army military intelligence adviser, I stayed on in Asia for two decades as a businessperson in Hong Kong, the Philippines and Japan. Returning to the U.S. and managing a laser and sensor manufacturing company in Los Angeles, I subsequently accepted a position as an operations officer in the Central Intelligence Agency. Duane Mello is on page 155 of 288 of Spies of the Balkans: I finally was able to finish this non-stop, exciting best read yet by Furst. It was a thoroughly enjoyable story that was rich in vivid details, all told in a steady moving pace that held my interest throughout. I rank Furst up there with the best of Ludlum, Forsyth and Ignatius. He covers much of wartime Europe, ranging from Nazi racial theory to the beautiful women he seduces and his time spent under fire.
