Hi Suzanne!

Thank you for reading both "Between Shades of Gray" and "Out of the Easy!" I'm so glad you enjoyed them. Yes, I'm finishing a third book right now. I can't wait for you to read it! It's another WWII story and it will be published in summer or fall of 2015. -Ruta(less)

Hi Hannah-

Thank you for reading both of my books! Regarding your question, I was compelled to write "Between Shades of Gray" when I discovered that some of my extended family had been deported to Siberia. Stalin's terror affected so many, but there aren't many fictional stories about that piece of history.

I spent two years researching the book and interviewed many survivors. I absolutely love research. It's all so fascinating to me and I get so wrapped up in it. I have to force myself to stop researching and start writing! :-)

Thank you!

Ruta Sepetys Thank you Alisyn! I'm so thrilled that the book and story inspired you. I know that the people who experienced the deportations would be so moved to hear that!

Aimen Thank you so much for accepting my friend request! Like many, I have just read Between the Shades of Gray and loved it obviously. I would have never thought I'd been interested in the Soviet Union/Lithuanian history and the NKVD. It wasn't just the book that fascinated me, it was your video. I watched how this story came to be and you were so passionate in your video, even about writing (you love revising just as much as you love writing, adorable!) The background to how the story came about was so captivating, like wow. Thank you so much for this book and releasing a great story to the world.
I hope you release more books out soon; you made so many people cry.

P.S. Hope you do some meet in greets (Philadelphia, please!)
Is there a movie on Between the Shades of Gray, if so when?!

message 24: by Alisyn

Alisyn I just want to let you know that your book, Between Shades of Gray, has gotten me back into reading again. For a period of about two years I stopped reading and now that I have read your book... it has really inspired me. Not only to read more (which I already have started reading all the time!) but I too am a writer and it gave me inspiration to keep writing and to finally start trying to finish my novel... it really made me want to write something with meaning and importance.

Also, the lessons in your book have given me a lot of insight on many different things not only on the particular genocide but all genocides in general. Thank you! This is my new favorite book and I've already let my good friend borrow it so she too could be inspired and learn :)

Chelsey I just finished Between Shades of Gray and the story seemed so real. While I was reading the story I became so Attached to the characters that when one of the characters died I felt the pain of the people that cared about that person. This story changed my perspective on how our community isn't that bad. I can't wait to read another one of your books.
