About this author

Grew up in South Carolina, an unreconstructed Confederate and dyed-in-the-wool Southern Presbyterian.
Attended college (B.A. in Classical Liberal Arts) and graduate school (M.A. in Trinitarian Theology and Culture) at New Saint Andrews College in Moscow, ID, where I shed the more unsavory features of both of those ideologies, and was shaped by the invaluable mentorship of Dr. Peter Leithart
Currently studying for a Ph.D at the University of Edinburgh, where I have been pleased to discover that there is more to the world, and to Christianity, than America.

Although two weeks have now passed since thesis submission, this blog rmains depressingly silent, a victim of a frenzied rush of packing and shipping, and a dizzying international and trans-continental itinerary that will continue for another couple of weeks.

However, I do have some material to share here while the travels continue, drawn from a dialogue I have been carrying on in leisurely fash...

The Christian Polity of John Calvin by Harro Höpfl
A mixed bag to be sure, but some true gems of insight, and a mass of detailed exposition here, particularly on the close relationship between ministry and magistracy that Calvin envisioned. More proof that Calvin was anything but a R2Ker.
Restoring Christ's Church by Michael S. Springer
Absolutely fascinating stuff here. John a Lasco is perhaps the most forgotten major Reformer, but was arguably one of the most decisive for the future shape of the Reformed tradition—or of Reformed ecclesiology at any rate. This book amasses impressi...more
International Calvinism 1541-1715 by Menna Prestwich
Some really excellent stuff in here, especially the essays, "Calvinism in Geneva in the time of Calvin and of Beza (1541-1605)" and "The Ambivalent Face of Calvinism in the Netherlands, 1561-1618"—those two will stretch and break a lot of overly-simp...more
Calvin, Geneva And The Reformation by Ronald S. Wallace
So apparently I read this before. I opened it up, and there was my highlighting—ugly, sloppy, haphazard. I'm thinking I must've read this freshman year in college, but to be honest, I had no recollection of it. Scary.

Anyway, this is a great little i...more
