Beirut in Shades of Grey (Literature & Fiction)
1 chapters   —   updated Mar 31, 2012 01:48am
Description: Two souls brought together by love are distanced by the challenges of living with conflicting social values during times of extreme political stress. Rasha Halwani, a victim of the Lebanese civil war, and Luke Elliott, a British photojournalist, begin a clandestine romance while on vacation in Paris. However, the tranquility of their previous encounters quickly dissipates when Luke’s unannounced arrival on Rasha’s doorstep in Beirut incites a wrangle over cultural differences and polarized attitudes towards war. Once certain of her values and her role as a woman in late 20th-century Islamic society, Rasha finds herself stymied by the choices before her and the ramifications of pursuing a life with this Westerner. Recently reviewed under www.rambles.net/mills_beirut07.html as "an insightful and sometimes terrifying glimpse into the life of one woman..."

Description: On the remote island of Puerto Franco, young Leah wades into the sea and disappears. Her body is never found. Thirty years later, visual artist Mar arrives on the island with her daughter, Lemay. She anticipates a haven where she can work on her craft, away from her controlling and womanizing husband. Instead, Mar finds herself in the midst of a close-knit community haunted by the curse of Puerto Franco. Visitations from Leah’s spirit and a growing love for the dead girl’s brother Sebastian, draw Mar into an undercurrent of obsessive love, hatred, and revenge.
