About this author

My new novel, THE DAMNED, about fraternal twins and near-death experience, will be published in Canada and the US by Simon & Schuster on Feb. 10, 2015. Film rights have already been sold to Legendary Pictures/Universal (Inception, Interstellar, Godzilla, the Dark Knight films). My previous novel, THE DEMONOLOGIST, was an Amazon and Globe and Mail Best Book of the Year, a #1 bestseller in Canada, and won the International Thriller Writers Award for Best Hardcover Novel. The film rights have been sold to ImageMovers (Robert Zemeckis' production company) and Universal Pictures. My previous novels include THE GUARDIANS, THE KILLING CIRCLE, THE WILDFIRE SEASON and LOST GIRLS. I live in Toronto.

Nick and I are touring a lot together these days, and as writers of scary stories, we cannot help but do some story spitballing now and then. We have even talked about writing a screenplay together based on an idea we cooked up in a pub the other night! So you never know...(less)

Read a lot, of course. Read everything, and without a plan in your head. Read what makes you feel like you wished you had written it.

Other than this, if I had to boil my kernels of advice down to the most important piece, it would be to think about your story in advance before beginning it. Challenge the idea, pitch it to friends, find ways to make it pop, inject it with steroids of excitement. This will not only make your story better, but will make you more excited to write it. Make sure that it is the story you HAVE to tell. It has to have that urgency, that sense of necessity. If that is not happening, think of another story.

Finally, do not submit anything before it is the absolute best you can make it. Revise and revise again. Ask for honest opinions from those who read it. Do not let the urge to send something in trump the job of doing your best. Because despite what anyone says, you only get one first read. Oh, and...good luck!(less)

Catherine Hi Andrew! Nice to meet you. :-)

Hi Catherine!

Readers unite,

Catherine Thanks for the friend request. It's funny, because not long ago I was reading about your experience at Berton House in the Writer's Trust of Canada newsletter thingy...

all the best,

Thomas Bruso Andrew, I love your books! THE KILLING CIRCLE is mind blowing. I couldn't put it down. I too enjoyed THE GUARDIANS. I ordered THE DEMONOLOGIST and am looking forward to another great read. Keep writing!
