Her voice was so modern and vibrant and messy and alive. She just stepped off the page as a character for me. I became a bit obsessed and fell down the Bloomsbury rabbit hole. I chose this format because they are so closely associated with diaries and letters. That is how they lived in my imagination. Thank you for getting in touch!(less)

They are edited by Regina Marler and they are just wonderful. The rest are largely held in archives in places such as London, Sussex and New York. I spent a huge amount of time in archives to get the voice of Vanessa and I am so happy you like the result! (less)

So I have not written a plumbean since last February. I have a really really good reason. I have been writing, editing, rewriting, writing some more and finally finishing my second book! It is the story of the painter Vanessa Bell and her famous sister, the writer, Virginia Woolf. The outrageous brilliant artistic literary friends are all there and the story is set in glamorous bohemian pre-war... Read more of this blog post »

Vanessa and Her Sister by Priya Parmar
"I loved this. I didn't expect to, both because I'm a huge Virginia Woolf aficionado, and because I'm always wary of books that have so much hype and publicity, but I thought it was superb. Beautiful writing, sensitively drawn characters. I highly..." Read more of this review »

The narrative pounds with a strong beating heart. The language is unexpected, and delicate. The characters are addictive and authentic. It is a beautiful unputdownable combination.

“I am not waiting. I am not waiting for anyone any more. It was me I was waiting for.”

“A family is a messy unwieldy thing bounded only by blood andbeneath all the embarrassmentaffection.”
Priya Parmar, Exit the Actress

“The rest of us are still living on the borrowed fuel of potential and so far have not left deep footprints. But together we carry a brackish air of importance. As if we are doing something worthy in the world. Maybe how we live our lives is the grand experiment? Mixing company, throwing out customs, using first names, waiting to marry, ignoring the rules, and choosing what to care about. Is that why we matter? Or perhaps Miss Warre-Cornish is right and we do not matter in the least.”
