Kelly Creagh's Blog

December 20, 2012

Greetings and Happy Holidays!

Just wanted to update ye olde blog to share some very cool info regarding the Poe House and January.

So you know, I was supposed to sign copies of Nevermore and Enshadowed in the graveyard on Halloween but then super-storm Sandy moved in and made things a bit too tricky for me to attempt travel to Baltimore after all.

However, I will now be at Westminster Hall singing on Saturday January 19th 2013 for Edgar Allan Poe’s 204th Birthday Bash!

The event will also include several Poe themed theatrical performances and an apple cider toast to Poe!

Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door.

Doors will open at 7:00pm and the performance will begin at 8:00pm

The Westminster Burial Grounds and Poe’s grave are located at 519 W. Fayette St. Baltimore, MD 21201

For more information, please check out the Poe Forevermore home site by clicking here.

Also, many of you know that I’ve been posting intermittently regarding the Poe House Museum in Baltimore. The Poe House did end up closing last September but may reopen in early 2013. A bit more information and a few links to follow for receiving updates on the status of the Poe House can be found here.

BUT, if you would like to help the Poe House and get a special holiday treat at the same time, then check this out! http://www.poeforevermore.com/news.html

The very talented Mark Redfield reads Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and the program runs approximately 1 hour. The download is $4.99 (CDBabay takes a small cut) and the profits will be donated to The Poe House next year.

I’ve already downloaded my audio copy of A Christmas Carol and have been merrily listening between my holiday errand stops.

Is all of your shopping done?

See you in Baltimore and Happy Holidays!!

Kelly

POE HALLOWEEN EVENT UPDATE

Hey my fellow ghouls and goblins. So I’m a bit bummed to say that, due to storm Sandy, I will not be appearing in Baltimore tomorrow for the annual Halloween Poe Event.

As of right now, the event itself is still on and you can check for updates HERE (be sure to “Like” the Poe House while you’re there!)

There may be a future Baltimore event in the works and I’ll post details here on my blog and Facebook if and when those details become available.

I’ve been thinking of all my readers on the East coast today. Guys, I know this one was a doozie! Stay safe out there.

Thank you all and have a happy and safe Halloween!

All Hallows Eve quickly approaches and there are two EPIC events in the works!

On October the 26th, I’ll be taking a break from writing the final book in the Nevermore trilogy to co-host the Poe Inspired Masquerade Ball in Louisville, Kentucky at the Barnes and Noble at The Summit. This event will be held from 6:30pm to 8:30pm EST.

So grab your masks, don your ball gowns, hook your arm through Red Death’s and head to Barnes and Noble!

But wait…there’s more!

Joining me will be fellow YA authors Bethany Griffin (The Masque of the Red Death), Katie McGarry (Pushing the Limits) and Julie Kagawa (The Iron Fey series and The Immortal Rules.)

There may even be a special guest appearance by Mr. Edgar Allan Poe himself!

Be sure to wear your most beautiful/scary/outlandish/stylish masquerade costume.

Also, we will hold a drawing for a prize pack including signed books and swag!

For more information, you can go to Barnes and Noble’s events page by clicking here!

AND on Halloween Night, Wednesday October 31st, I will be in Baltimore, MD at Westminster Cemetery where Poe is buried for the annual 2012 Halloween Baltimore Poe event!

6:00pm to 9:00pm EST

Westminster Cemetery is also one of the major settings for Enshadowed. So stop by, Pay Eddie a visit, retrace Isobel and Gwen’s footsteps through the graveyard, tour the catacombs where Izzy and Gwen hide out, say hey to J. Meredith’s tomb, walk in the shadow of the Poe Toaster and get your book signed in the meantime!

I will be signing at this event and there will also be other cool happenings, such as a performance of Poe’s Masque of the Red Death, dramatic readings and a few special guest appearances by figures from Poe’s past.

$5 admission for adults and $3 admission for children under 12.

The location for this event is:

519 W. Fayette St.

Baltimore, MD 21201

For more information, you can visit the Poe Forevermore site by clicking here!

If you’re planning on coming to one of these events, please leave a comment!

To me!

That’s right, today is my birthday and I have decided to celebrate by giving away a finished and signed copy of Enshadowed! The prize pack will also include a butterfly keychain watch like the one Isobel carries in the novel, a hamsa necklace like the one Isobel wears on the cover, signed bookmarks, temporary tattoos and a Varen purple pen!

Here is a photo of  the prize!

To enter, send me an e-mail at kellycreagh@kellycreagh.com including your name and full snail mail address. In the subject line of the e-mail, please put ENSHADOWED CONTEST.

I will draw a winner at random one week from today on August 18th, sign the book to you and mail the prize to the winner on the same day.  That means I’ll need to have all entries in my inbox by midnight on the 17th. That’s not a super long time, so help me spread the word!!

Please be respectful to others and enter the contest only once.

As promised, I am opening this contest up to U.S. and international.

Release day is almost here!!!

August 10, 2012

Happy Friday!

Today, I have the pleasure of participating in a blog tour to help spread the word about a fantastic debut by fellow YA author and friend Katie McGarry!

Meet  Pushing The Limits

I absolutely LOVED this book. Like flames on the sides of my face love. To find out why, you can visit my Goodreads review here.

So check it out!

Stop #10

Echo and Noah both attend the same high school, but that’s where their similarities seem to end.  Their paths cross however, when, on the first day of school after winter break they both meet their newly appointed school social worker.  Katie McGarry wrote Pushing the Limits in alternating points of view, one chapter by Echo, the next by Noah.  Check out the excerpts below, taken from the first chapters of Katie’s debut novel.  Want to read from the beginning? Every stop on the blog tour features new excerpts – the complete tour schedule can be found here: http://harlequinblog.com/2012/07/two-essential-ways-to-build-your-characters/.

Echo:

“Well, now that we’ve settled that…” Ashley and her baby bump perched on the edge of the chair, preparing to stand. “I accidentally overbooked today and I have an OB appointment. We may find out the baby’s gender.”

“Mrs. Emerson, Echo’s academics aren’t the reason for this meeting, but I understand if you need to leave.” She withdrew an official letter from her top drawer as a red-faced Ashley sat back in her seat. I’d seen that letterhead several times over the past two years. Child Protective Services enjoyed killing rain- forests.

Mrs. Collins read the letter to herself while I secretly wished I would spontaneously combust. Both my father and I slouched in our seats. Oh, the freaking joy of group therapy.

While waiting for her to finish reading, I noticed a stuffed green frog by her computer, a picture of her and some guy— possibly her husband—and then on the corner of her desk a big blue ribbon. The fancy kind people received when they won a competition. Something strange stirred inside me. Huh—weird.

Mrs. Collins hole-punched the letter and then placed it in my already overwhelmed file. “There. I’m officially your therapist.” When she said nothing else, I drew my gaze away from the ribbon to her. She was watching me. “It’s a nice ribbon, isn’t it,

Echo?”

My father cleared his throat and sent Mrs. Collins a death glare. Okay, that was an odd reaction, but then again, he was irritated just to be here. My eyes flickered to the ribbon again. Why did it feel familiar? “I guess.”

Noah:

“Your old guidance counselor at Highland spoke highly of you. Made the varsity basketball team your freshman year, honor roll, involved in several student activities, popular amongst your peers.” She surveyed me. “I think I would have liked that kid.”

So did I—but life sucked. “Little late for me to join the basketball team—halfway through the season and all. Think coach will be fine with my tattoos?”

“I have no interest in you re-creating your old life, but together I think we can build something new. A better future than the one you will have if you continue down your current path.”

She sounded so damn sincere. I wanted to believe her, but I’d learned the hard way to never trust anyone. Keeping my face devoid of emotion, I let the silence build.

She broke eye contact first and shook her head. “You’ve been dealt a rough hand, but you’re full of possibilities. Your scores on the aptitude tests are phenomenal and your teachers see your potential. Your grade point average needs a boost, as does your attendance. I believe those are related.

“Now, I have a plan. Along with seeing me once a week, you will attend tutoring sessions until your G.P.A. matches your test scores.”

I stood. I’d already missed first period. This fun little meeting got me out of second. But since

I’d actually gotten my ass out of bed, I intended to go to class sometime today. “I don’t have time for this.”

A slight edge crept into her tone, so subtle I almost missed it. “Do I need to contact your social worker?”

I headed for the door. “Go ahead. What is she going to do? Rip my family apart? Put me in the foster care system? Continue to dig and you’ll see you’re too late.”

“When was the last time you saw your brothers, Noah?” My hand froze on the doorknob.

“What if I could offer you increased supervised visitation?” I let go of the doorknob and sat back down.

** To find out what happens next, pick up a copy of Pushing the Limits at your local bookstore, online or at the library.  Happy reading! **

Also, there is a contest running on Katie’s Blog. If you click THIS magical highlighted bit of text, you can find out the details! Word on the street is that the grand prize is pretty sweet!

June 1, 2012

WOW! If you haven’t already, you must go to Varen’s Sketchbook and check out all the AMAZING entries I received! I adored this contest so much because every time I checked my inbox, it felt like I was opening a present.

I want to say thank you to everyone who submitted an entry. Your artwork has brought me so much excitement and I’ve had a blast sharing your work with friends, family and readers.

So without further ado, I’ll tell you who the winners are! Remember that the winners of the contest were chosen in a random drawing. If someone submitted more than one piece of art/picture, their name still went into the drawing ONE time. I put all entries together and picked two.

Prize one goes to

Sagan!  And this was Sagan’s lovely entry. Isn’t it incredible? The detail is stunning. I mean—LOOK at Varen’s jacket!!! And check out the frills and layers on Isobel’s dress! A-MA-ZING! Congrats Sagan! Your prize pack is on its way.

Prize two goes to Molly! I have to tell you, I smiled SO big when I got Molly’s entry. You see, I love My Little Pony. No, like really, I do. Like, seriously. Have you seen the show lately? It cracks me up so much and, actually, Pinkie Pie is my favorite character. So can you imagine my utter delight when Molly submitted Pikie POE? A Noc pony!!! I mean, I died. So cute and so very clever. Congratulations Molly! Keep an eye on your mailbox. You’ve got goodies headed in your direction.

Gah! I wish I had enough prizes to send to everyone! However, know that I’m planning another contest for the hardback release of Enshadowed, and that will included finished, signed copies of the novel. I might have another one of those Poe T-shirts up my sleeve, too.

Thank you all again and I hope, like me, you had a blast with this!

May 9, 2012

Greetings my lovely readers!

I am announcing my website update today! Isn’t it lovely?

Among the updates you’ll find:

-Links to where you can pre-order Enshadowed, the upcoming sequel to Nevermore.

-Some cool new imagery and hints as to what is to come for Varen and Isobel.

-Updated questions and answers on my FAQ page.

-A new Playlist for Enshadowed can be found on my “Extras” page along with links to purchase the official Nevermore Poe Collection e-book, which includes a forward by yours truly. If you don’t have this collection already, it’s an excellent Poe source to have on hand while reading Nevermore and Enshadowed. I mean—it’s official!

-And last but not least—an AWESOME new page called “Varen’s Sketchbook.” This is a new gallery where I’m most happy to post your Nevermore related drawings/art/photos. On this page, you will also find concept art by me and photos I have taken that provide me with inspiration. There are also old photos from Poe’s time in this gallery as well.

And that brings me to my next announcement. Contest time! Many of you saw on my Facebook that I received advanced reader copies for Enshadowed in the mail. Huzzah! Advanced reader copies (also known as ARCS) are uncorrected proofs of the novel. They are released several months before the actual novel hits the shelf. And I have two to give away!

And since I have a new gallery page—can’t you guess what I’m going to ask for?

Art!

So here are the contest rules.

I need you to draw/photograph/video/recreate in SOME visual way a scene from Nevermore.

So think images! Something I can show off in “Varen’s Sketchbook.”

Like Varen and Isobel at the Grim Façade

Or Pinfeathers giving Isobel the note from Varen at the Trenton vs. Millings football game.

What about when Isobel looks in the bathroom mirror and sees Reynolds?

Gwen sitting next to Varen in the cafeteria, chomping that Granny Smith apple in his ear.

Or Gwen dressed up in Stevie’s sweatshirt, posing as Henry the Hawk’s mascot escort.

Isobel in the woodlands…

Varen on the cliff…

Think about your favorite moment!

This will be a U.S. only contest. (Hold tight international readers, I will host an international contest when I have finished copies of Enshadowed.)

I know you’ll all submit your best work and I will post all entries in “Varen’s Sketchbook.” I will choose a winner the same way I always do—in a random drawing that includes ALL entries. So this isn’t a contest about being Van Gogh, it’s about having fun and geeking ourselves out!

So put on your creativity hats and don’t be afraid to be outlandish. You could even design paper dolls and photograph the results. What about making a Varen plushy? Or even a Reynolds plushy, complete with disgruntled grumpy face. Any costume designers out there? What about a short music video? Hey…remember those shoe box projects teachers always made you do in grade school?

The ones that looked something like this:

Yeah. Replace those dinos and meteor with Varen and Woodlands of Weir and SNAP—contest entry AND a new decoration piece for your room.

So get carried away! I know I do…

OKAY. HERE ARE THE DETAILS. READ CAREFULLY.

All entries must be in my inbox by midnight on May 30th.

I will announce the winners AND mail off the prize packs on June 1st

You must submit your art/photo/video/paperdolls/Sistine Chapel ceiling mural masterpiece as a LINK. I will not be able to download attachments. Some sites that I have seen folks post images on include Photobucket, Facebook and deviantART as well as personal blogs. Youtube is the place for videos. Keep in mind that if you are sending me a Facebook link, you’ll need to friend request me first. You can do that here.

Also keep in mind that I do plan to post all submitted images on my website.

Entries should be e-mailed to KellyCreagh@KellyCreagh.com

In the body of your e-mail, you should include both the link to your entry and your physical mailing address (not your e-mail.) I need this information so that I can pop your prize into the mail right away if yours is the entry I pull on June first.

Now let’s talk about the prizes!

First place prize (for the entry I draw first) will include:

-A signed ARC of Enshadowed

-Signed Nevermore bookmarks

-Temporary Raven tattoos

-Temporary Cemetery Sighs tattoos. (Cemetery Sighs is the name of Varen’s favorite band (and one of my favorite bands, I might add.) If you haven’t already, check out the Extra’s page for a free download of the haunting song “Emily Not Not Gone,” which appears in chapter 8 of Nevermore.)

-A butterfly keychain watch (Isobel carries a watch like this one in Enshadowed.)

-A hamsa necklace (like the one Isobel wears on the cover of Enshadowed.)

-A Varen purple pen.

AND

A WICKED SWEET Edgar Allan Poe T-shirt.

Here is a photo of prize pack ONE:

-Second Prize (the entry I draw second) will include:

–A signed ARC of Enshadowed.

-Signed Nevermore bookmarks.

-Temporary Raven tattoos.

-Temporary Cemetery Sighs tattoos.

-A butterfly keychain watch.

-A hamsa necklace.

-A Varen purple pen.

Here is a photo of prize pack TWO:

So team up! Enlist your friends, enlist your family! Pull an Isobel and make your dad dress up like Poe himself!

In the meantime, I’ll be looking forward to your entries and writing like mad.

Until then, Sweet nightmares.

March 1, 2012

Gabrielle from Kearny New Jersey!   Congrats Gabrielle! I'm putting your prize into the mail this morning and then it's on its way to you!

Thank you to everyone who entered (there were over one hundred entries!)

Closer to the release of Enshadowed, I'm planning to post another contest and I just got some goodies in the mail the other day for give-away purposes. These items include hamsa pendants very similar to the one Isobel wears on the cover of Enshadowed. I also have Edgar Allan Poe T-shirts, signed bookmarks and some other pretties. So stay tuned to my blog!

I'm also getting my calendar of events together for this year. So far, I do know I'll be returning to the Fort Knox library as well as the Louisville Free Public Library. On April 21, you'll find me at the Southern Kentucky Book Fest in Bowling Green Kentucky

For events times and details, I'll post both here and on Facebook as well. So if you haven't "liked" me, hop to!

Happy March First!
