Unlike most of the other reviews, I know the orthodox Jewish community, its practices, language, and the evils hidden within very well. This made me very impatient with the book's organization, its language and its pace.

The story is told from Gittel'...more

This is an easy afternoon read about a 17 year old who is kidnapped told in the first person as a report after she is released.

It gives a heartbreaking account of what it's like to be a randomly selected victim held for a prisoner exchange.

I really wanted to like this book, but it didn't make sense.

It was supposed to take place in the aftermath of a coup in 70s Buenos Aires but it didn't seem to relate to the location in anyway.

The author's tone is light, almost silly, and his plotting...more

This book was created from a retreat the authors conduct and as such it doesn't work to simply read it- it requires lots of time and energy to do the exercises.

The most interesting part of the book is how it is organized into five levels of conscious...more

I always prefer to read a novel rather than short stories, but these are witty, well-written tales that actually tie together beautifully.

As the title of the book implies, these are all very Jewish stories related to survival. Englander is knowledge...more

It's a thrill to discover an author I am not familiar. Thanks GoodReads for introducing me to David Grossman.

These are two fascinating stories in one volume. I didn't give the book five stars because it is challenging to follow all of the thoughts as...more

Others have commented on the great writing, but I couldn't find it in this slow moving plot.
