About this author

I was raised in Providence, RI, and have lived there for much of my life. My first marriage was to a Maine guide who was also a biologist and we lived in the wilderness for two years. By wilderness, I mean the only access was by canoe to a spot which only he could recognize in the lush foliage on the banks. Then we had to backpack to the top of Mount Daicy in Aroostock County. I cooked on a wood stove. There was no indoor plumbing, phone or electricity, but I loved it. I came back to civilization after my oldest son was born. That ended the marriage.

I received my doctorate in Linguistics from Brown and did groundbreaking research in schizophrenic speech, publishing what has turned out to be the classic work on the subject. I've also done ex...more

That's intriguing. I'd never thought about it in terms of identity. Here I thought it was about the tomatoes! read more »

0 chapters   —   updated Jun 21, 2009 01:36pm
Description: Shows how to analyze psychotic speech and why thi has to be done linguistically for valid interpretations. This book made my reputation internationally, and has itself become the reference for later works on this subject. Nobody has ever refuted the major study this is based on, nor the linguistic discourse analyses. I have spoken on this subject as the keynote speaker at a Royal College of Psychiatrists conference in England and the International Conference of Psychiatrists in Madrid, Spain

Elaine I tried to start a discussion group called Books and eReaders. So far, nobody seems to have found it. eReaders are causing a revolution in the world of books. What are your thoughts about that?

Will they encourage more people to read? Or, will they be the end of books? Will people confine their knowledge to whatever they can google? How will eReaders affect literacy as we know it? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this topic.

Already, public libraries purchase eBooks which you can download to your eReader. Amazon said they sold more eBooks last year than physical books. Since Amazon sold 40% of all the books bought in the US last year, these facts are not trivial.

What will happen to publishing houses with the advent of eBooks?

Join the discussion, pro and con. You don't have to own an eReader to contribute, but you should at least have tried to read something on one.

Please, however, don't use this as a platform to advertise the brand of eReader you own. You may want to mention that because not all eReaders have the same capabilities. Kindle, for instance, doesn't allow downloading library books. NOOKcolor lets you see pictures in National Geographic in vivid color.
