Hot latte coffee cup and laptob in coffee shop - vintage effect style pictures

If you’ve ever struggled with plotting out a novel or knowing what comes next during your writing process, you might want to check out the free video mini course that I’m offering over at  So far we’ve covered how we’re neurologically wired for story, the three key elements of every successful story, how to write a powerful premise and how to design a compelling conflict.  This week we’re going to talk about the structure that underlies every successful story and give you a story structure blueprint that you can use in your own work!

Stop by and check it out!

I’m extremely pleased to note that Midian Unmade: Tales of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed, the horror anthology that I co-edited with Del Howison, has been nominated by the members of the Horror Writers Association (HWA) for the Bram Stoker Award.

This is my third time being nominated so let’s hope three’s the charm! (The first was for my debut novel Riverwatch and the second was for non-fiction for the blog I founded, Storytellersunplugged.)

Here’s the full list of those in my category:

Superior Achievement in an Anthology

Michael Bailey – The Library of the Dead (Written Backwards)

Ellen Datlow – The Doll Collection: Seventeen Brand-New Tales of Dolls (Tor Books)

Christopher Golden – Seize the Night (Gallery Books)

Nancy Kilpatrick and Caro Soles – nEvermore! (Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing)

Jonathan Maberry – The X-Files: Trust No One (IDW Publishing)

Joseph Nassise and Del Howison – Midian Unmade (Tor Books)

I’m going to be writing my next book via a Patreon campaign and I want you to join me!

If you aren’t familiar with Patreon, it is a kind of crowd-funding service for creative folks, similar in some ways to Kickstarter.  But where Kickstarter asks funders to help make a one time pledge to get a big roject completed, Patreon is more of an ongoing means of supporting an artist or singer or writer (like yours truly.)  Backers pledge a certain amount each month and get charged when the creator delivers something to them.

This little video is terrific at explaining Patreon quickly and easily – take a look!

I’m going to be writing and delivering Darkness Reigns in what I’m calling chapter packs.  Each pack will contain three chapters from the novel.  You can get these packs for as low as a single dollar ($1.00). Doing so will also entitle you to the ebook edition when the project is complete.  The final book will be about 30 chapters and 300 pages in length (similar to all the other Templar books) so you end up paying around $10 in the end if you chose the $1.00 pledge level.  But you’ll get to read the book before anyone else and you won’t have to wait until I’m done to get your Templar fix!

There are other pledge levels beyond that.  $5.00 a chapter pack gets you a signed paperback when the project is complete. $10 a chapter pack lets you see behind-the-scenes, where I’ll be sharing all the materials that go into producing the book, from my initial scene list to my chapter outline, all the way through the rough draft and to the final edited manuscript.  At this level I’ll also record a video each month, explaining background information and the reasons behind the various choices I’m making as I write the book.  If you’re serious about a writing career of your own, the $25 and $100 pledge levels give you group and one-on-one coaching to discuss your own projects.

Backers don’t get charged anything until I send each chapter pack, so if something happens during a particular month you won’t spend a dime.

In addition to the pledge levels there are various milestones that unlock additional elements for the project – commissioned cover art, professional editing, an exclusive Templar short story that won’t be available anywhere else for at least a year, etc.  The very first milestone ($300) is the most important one, because that’s the point when I sit down and start writing!

I understand that not everyone will want to be my patron, so rest assured that the book will be available in all the usual formats from all the usual vendors once it is complete.  The Patreon campaign is for those who want to read it sooner than everyone else – and who want a glimpse behind the scenes to see how it all comes together!

The campaign is now live and you can find it at

The sooner we hit that first milestone, the sooner I start writing, sp please support the project if you can.

December 30, 2015

It has been delayed several times because, well, life but at long last the sixth book in the Templar Chronicles series is now here!

Fall of Night picks up just a few days after the events of Judgment Day and brings the second trilogy (consisting of Infernal Games, Judgment Day, and Fall of Night) to a close.  It also sets up the action for the third and possibly final trilogy coming later this year.

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller Joseph Nassise continues his internationally bestselling Templar Chronicles series with Fall of Night!

At long last former Knight Commander Cade Williams has defeated the Adversary, but his victory has come at a terrible cost. His wife, Gabrielle, is no more. His reputation lies in tatters, his trust in others broken. His closest friends and allies are now at risk from the very Order they pledged their lives to maintain. If it could go wrong, it has.

Unable to bear the reality of what he has done, all Cade wants to do is find a deep hole and pull it in after him. Let the world go on without him, for all he loves is lost and he sees no reason to continue.

Cade thinks it is over.

Cade is wrong.

Some of the retailers are still bringing the product online and I’ll add them to this list as they become available.  For the moment, you can get your copy of Fall of Night at:
