A smart and haunting novel about socialists who had to leave Germany in the 30s and lived in exile in London. A story of courage and betrayal. Composed with an ambitious structure, told in different voices, very well done.

A gripping first person narrative told in the voice of 8th grader Stick about brotherly love, surviving abusive parents, discovering love and not loosing hope. Smith knows how to involve us deeply with the character.
