As an adult, this picky eater found herself in the most unlikely of circumstances: a graduate of culinary school who became a cheesemonger and then a food writer. Along the way, she realized just how common her plight was. Picky eating is an issue for millions of kids; there are even support groups for adults who can't kick it. But remarkably little is known about the science of picky eating, and cultural and historical questions abound: Are picky eaters des...more

You know that episode of Deep Space Nine where Odo realizes he's a changeling and joins the Great Link that connects the consciousnesses of all other changelings? Becoming a parent is EXACTLY like that.

This is one of those times where words will elude me to write this review. I read this entire book with a high level of dread and anxiety. I wanted to stop because I was so scared of the climax but I knew if I did I'd never get the peace of the resol...more

Neal Stephenson
“Wartime lipstick is necessarily cobbled together from whatever tailings and gristle were left over once all the good stuff was use to grease propeller shafts. A florid and cloying scent is needed to conceal its unspeakable mineral and animal origins.

It is the smell of War.”
Neal Stephenson, Cryptonomicon

“Banks used to issue their own currencies. You can see these old banknotes in the Smithsonian. ‘First National Bank of South Bumfuck will remit ten pork bellies to the bearer,’ or whatever. That had to stop because commerce became nonlocal—you needed to be able to take your money with you when you went out West, or whatever."

"But if we’re online, the whole world is local," Randy says.”

“I beg your pardon?" Robson says.

One thing Waterhouse likes about these Brits is that when they don't know what the hell you're talking about, they are at least open to the possibility that it might be their fault.”
Neal Stephenson, Cryptonomicon

Henry David Thoreau
“A written word is the choicest of relics. It is something at once more intimate with us and more universal than any other work of art. It is the work of art nearest to life itself. It may be translated into every language, and not only be read but actually breathed from all human lips; -- not be represented on canvas or in marble only, but be carved out of the breath of life itself.”
Henry David Thoreau, Walden

Christopher Moore
“You know what? You know what? You know what?' I was waving my finger under her nose. 'You scratched the Son of God. That's your ass, that's what.”
Christopher Moore, Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal
